Reading the Bible cannot save you.

What I could never understand even when I was Catholic is how Catholics always accuse Protestant denoms. of claiming that they are the only true church when it is the Catholic church that is guiltier of that than anyone. The pot calling the kettle black in Goliath size fashion.

Amen to that.
So tell me, so if you give a Bible like a man like David Koresh and through his own interpretation form his own sect. How about those Baptists who preached “Thank God for IED”… these all came out of self-intepretation of the Bible.

You can justify murder if the Bible is not intepreted properly. So the Bible cannot save you. Only God’s grace can.

Those folks obviously did not interpret scripture through reasoning and intercession of the holy spirit and it is obvious to anyone who is a Christian. I do agree that only grace from God can save you, not from Mary and not just from reading scripture although it all is based in scripture and it is the means of education, after all, it is Jesus’ own words in the Gospels.

If I read a book on first aid on the topic of snake bites, and later in life I get bitten by a snake and I know how to treat it does the book get credit for saving my life. If I read the bible and follow its laws and wisdom does it save me later in life.👍

Well, Catholic doctrine doesn’t teach that Mary saves. I hope our Protestants don’t assumed that. We only acknowledge the redeeming power of Jesus Christ.

Ah, you and I finally agree whole-heartedly on something!

I think Manny is just confused about Protestant teaching.

I do believe that reading the Bible is important.
I do believe that if someone didn’t know about Christ and read the Bible… It’d be a great way for them to learn.
I don’t know any protestants who believe reading the Bible alone saves anybody. All of them I know believe it’s by God’s grace and Faith.

Someone bringing up “Mary saves” is pretty relevant as both “Mary saves” and “reading the Bible saves” are about equal in how many people believe them to be true (as in that alone saves people). Trusting both (Bible and Mary) can lead you to God. Neither are all you need to be saved.

I agree the Bible is excellent reading. It gives us to look within ourselves and the great book has many spiritual benefits. I can attest that some Protestants (not all) have said in their conversion like Tim LaHaye, one of the Left Behind Series, after reading the Gideon Bible accepted Jesus just by reading a book. Now the Book itself cannot save you. It is just made of dead tree with ink markers of letters, description God’s relationship with mankind.

Certain actions need to happen to be saved.

First acknowledge that you are a sinner, repent, be baptized, and them your are saved. Does it stop there. No. Christians have to have a daily conversions. Fr. Corapi once said, “We live by faith not by sight.”

How do we show our faith. Pure Christian charity. We do this with by the inner workings of the grace of God. We show love of neighbor, and doing many of the good deeds like helping the poor, building houses for the less unfortunate, in addition to an active spiritual life by praying often to God.

Reading the Bible can lead you to God, and devotion to Mary because in the rosary, God is never neglected. If we did, we would not recite the Apostles Creed, Our Father, the Doxology (Glory Be), or recite the first Mysteries of one of four Mysterious, which contains the life of Jesus Christ.

God alone saves.

*thought she just said that.

My suggestion to you is that you read the Bible. My suggestion to everyone is that they read the Scriptures. Lord knows that I need to read the Bible more than I do. The Word of God is as sharp as a two edged sword and, through the convicting grace of the Holy Spirit, can lead you to salvation.
👍 I have grown in my faith since I started studying the Bible.

👍 This is true. We need to grow in our faith and become more like Christ every day. Conversion is a life long process. That is why we say we are working out our salvation in fear and trembling.

Manny,

God bless, and peace be to you.

When reading someone like Thomas Aquinas, I often cannot help but laugh. Not derisively-- I have far too much respect for him to act as such. But, just, you know, chuckle to myself at the amusing form in which he argues. After you read a couple of Thomas’ questions you get familiar with the way he deals with objections.

I always laugh because I can see certain manouvers coming from a mile away. Usually he pivots on a phrase like this, where something can be thought of in two ways or two senses. For instance, in question 90 on the essence of law, he responds to an objection by saying, “it may be in something in two ways.” Or, in the first question of the second part about man’s last end when he says, “We can speak of the last end in two ways.”

What’s important is that Thomas, by doing this, recognizes the legitimacy of the objection, and then delineates in what sense it is true and in what sense it is false.

Can we take, “saved” according to various senses? It seems to me that when we say, “God saves you” we mean saves in a slightly different way than when we say, “faith saves you,” and in a slightly different way than when we say, 'baptism saves you," and in a slightly different way when we say, “your brother saved you” (as in James). All of these are biblical expressions, and yet clearly we cannot take all of these in an unrestricted fashion.

Manny, is saying, “God alone saves,” somehow restrictive to saying, “baptism saves you?” Obviously the first is a sound statement of Christian theology. Obviously the second is a saying entrusted to us through the Epistle of Peter by an inerrant author.

I think ultimately we all agree in this thread-- it is not as if any of these mediate things exist divorced from God, whether faith, our Christian brother, baptism or the bible. Reading the Bible saves us at least as much as in the sense that the brother who rescues us from our error in James 5 saves us-- not to say that the Bible effects some ontological change in our being, unites our soul in charity to God, etc, but that the Bible is, like the good Christian brother who leads us from our sin, a means by which we are saved.

This type of language can be taken to an alarming degree if we aren’t careful.

Or again, much closer to home Manny-- what do you call the man who is ordained and ministers the sacraments? A priest?

But remember that Thomas Aquinas reminds us that, “only Christ is the true priest, the others being only his ministers.” (CCC 1545).

Now, picture a Protestant makes a topic: Catholic ministers are NOT priests.

Now, he says this averring that, “God alone is the true priest.” And, of course, he is absolutely right.

But he fails to see the sense in what sense Catholic priests really are, “priests”-- in the sense that they share in Christ’s one priesthood because Christ’s priesthood is made present in the Catholic priesthood.

It would be somewhat like this-- saying the Bible doesn’t save us. Why? God alone saves us (true!). But it is almost a linguistic problem, because there is a sense in which the Bible can save us, just as there is a sense in which our Christian brother can save us, etc.

Do you get my point? Do we agree that ultimately we all think the same thing? If you disagree Manny, can you point out to me where you think the likeness between the Christian brother of James and the Bible are, which I think are sufficiently alike to use similar language?

Thanks!

-Rob

Manny, I’m just guessing here, but I have the feeling that this thread was not aimed at non-Catholic Christians in general, and that it was especially not aimed at those of us, like 🙂 myself, Syele, SinginBeauty, & Co., who have hung around here long enough to get a better idea of what Catholics believe than, say, the likes of a Lorraine Boettner.
In fact, maybe you were speaking to someone over there in Iraq with you?? I don’t know…but I do know that I have seen/heard some really mean spirited remarks out of the mouths of people who–as I just remarked in another thread–hate Catholics more than they love Jesus.
People like that can really make you crazy, trying to get through to them, especially if you haven’t (like 😛 me) committed the entire New Testament & chunks of the Old one to memory, and  assume that since we haven’t, we must, perforce, not be Christians…

I say all this, only to say, that I hope no one takes this thread the wrong way…Manny is a great guy, who really loves & serves the Lord. He is also out there in Iraq, putting himslef in harm’s way, for the sake of all of us who love the USA.
I would like to believe that nobody is busy agitating you, Manny. It’s wrong, & its unfair, & its un-Christian, & we all need to cut it out, if we are.
I, for one, have put Manny in my prayer list, so that he will be in my prayers daily, & I would ask others reading this, to do the same…I speak as the daughter of a WW2 vet, who lived & (postwar, or I wouldn’t be here) died, secure in the belief that his safe passage had been the result of the prayers of those who love the Lord.
God bless you, & keep you safe.:gopray: :gopray: :gopray:

👍 Manny, I am praying for you and your fellow soldiers also. May God bless you and protect you. Thank you for your service. :blessyou: :signofcross: :byzsoc:

I’ll send one up for him too!

However, I would be interested in knowing how he can post on this forum at all hours of the day and night if he is in Iraq? :hmmm:

He seems to be on here all the time.
