All these are reasons Mary is a great role model for Christians. Mary teaches us that one need not be a great public figure to be a great person. That holding positions of authority doesn’t necessarily make one great (and, in fact, the opposite is often true). That “exerting control or influence” is not the goal of this life. That a mostly unremarkable and powerless person can live a relatively normal, simple life and by doing so serve God as fully and completely as any person that has ever lived – that is a remarkable and powerful message. Christianity is not (or, at least, should not be) about being the most powerful, the most influential or the most remarkable person - it is and should be about simply being a good person - the best person you can be. That is the message I get from Mary’s life. She was not a great teacher, warrior, academic or scholar. She did not die for her beliefs (as so many Christians did) nor did she is go out of her way to spread them like the apostles did. The Virgin Mary never held any position in the Church (at least before she died) and was not apparently capable of exerting control or influence her son’s followers.
