Hi everyone. I’ve been having some issues with my brother lately. He likes to watch tv shows that I find, not so good for him. Star Trek on Spike tv is one show I have a huge problem with.

Star Trek has some immodesty in it, and references to sexuality. And Spike tv is a network for men, not little boys. How do I convince my brother that these are no good for him? Everytime I talk to him about it, he screams at me to leave him alone. I tell him I want to help him, not hurt him. :nope:

I want to repair the wrong I’ve done. I was the one who got him into this stuff in the first place, the violent video games, and immodest shows. It’s my fault, I failed to be a good model big brother, and that hurts me a lot.😦 I want to protect him from the things I went through.

What can I do? Talking to my parents about this produces very little success. When I speak about this I usually speak in a judgemental way. Please can anyone offer some advice?

I realize your heart is in the right place, but you must allow your parents be the judge of what your brother is permitted to do. If you are concerned that he is watching too much TV, being judgmental or commanding is certainly not going to make it stop. Perhaps sharing interests or offering him the opportunity to do something you both enjoy together would be an option that would grow your relationship as brothers and be good for both of you.

**I agree. As much as you feel it is your responsibility, you cannot tell your little brother what to do or not do. You are not his dad. He will resent you and your relationship will suffer. So since you know you screwed up the role modeling, it is not too late to fix it.

Start being a good example right now, today. Forget about yesterday and don’t worry about tomorrow. I pray that you can develop a great relationship with your brother…and even though he is younger, remember that you are equals. You are not in a position of authority. As soon as you give up that route he may want to hang out with you and even think you’re cool:)**

sure, ironman. you have a much better chance of influencing your brother positively if you are his friend and spend time with him.

What in the world is wrong with Star Trek? :whacky:
Remember those frisky tribbles? Remember how fast they multiplied? Although they were certainly open to life, I find it hard to believe that they were all in valid marriages.

Jeez, you should see my boys watching Spike and Speed TV with their dad. My boys love the Mummy movies, the Scorpion King, Star Wars… those are male bonding sessions with Daddy and Opa!

ironman, how about you concentrate on yourself and leave your brother alone? Seriously, it seems like you need something to do, because if you are chastising someone for watching Star Trek, you really need another outlet for your energies. With all the **** that is on TV, you worry about Star Trek, which shows tolerance, diversity, dignity of all sentient beings, exploration and learning as a moral imperative, peaceful conflict resolution… I mean, come on! Nothing is perfect, nothing ever will be perfect, and if you are going to pick apart every good thing because it can’t be perfect, you will never have any joy or peace, and no one will want to be around you.

Funniest thing I’ve read all day yet!

Most TV shows these days do, too.

What age are we talking about here?

OK, let’s look at it from your brother’s point of view. You are nagging him for doing something YOU introduced him to. In his mind, you might be playing a mind game with him, and I would get upset, too.

I agree that nagging is a waste of time. No one wants to be preached at, especially by a brother or sister! Star Trek (any of the versions) is a whole lot better than most of the new TV shows anyway. As other people have said, it has good lessons in many episodes.

Offering to engage in a fun outdoor activity with a little brother might pry him away from the TV. Can you guys go ride bikes or build something or play ball or go to a pool or anything outside that might be more interesting than old reruns?

In my area there are a lot of people getting bikes for the whole family and taking long rides or racing with a bike club. We have kids as young as 6 years old who have joined the local triathlon club and started racing, so maybe you guys can find something to do or start a group together?

There are tons of fun games that everyone in the family can play also. My family bought these inexpensive video games that just plug a joystick box into the front of the TV. They are old arcade games like Ms. Pacman and Donkey Kong, etc. No sex, drugs or rock and roll involved.

Okay, as a huge SciFi fan, I MUST defend Star Trek!!! I used to love watching the original Star Trek with my dad, and the Next Generation with my dad and younger sibs once that series started. And Deep Space Nine and a bit of Voyager! Yes, I attended a convention and yes, I had my very own Vulcan ears (a must for all young trekkies). 👍

I was pretty young when I watched it… I do remember Capt. Kirk getting kissing a few alien babes, and the super-short skirts on all the female crew members. Even as a young girl I remember wondering “how do they get any work done in those tiny skirts?? How do they even WALK in those??”

In the Next Gen, I remember a few suggestive plot lines, most of them involving Commander Riker (randy little devil— totally the new Kirk). I don’t remember anything overtly sexual… there could have been. I’m sure my dad would have explained that it was inappropriate. I certainly don’t think I was inclined to have a more permissive view of sex because of Star Trek.

Star Trek actually raised many important moral questions. (Yes, nay-sayers, it’s true!) When I majored in philosophy in college, Star Trek was OVERWHELMINGLY the fave show of the faculty, the students, etc. I’m pretty sure that there was an elective class offered based around the ethical dilemnas raised in Star Trek.

So overall its a great series!! 😃

So now that I’ve outed myself as a TOTAL GEEK, anyone want to discuss the benefits of the later Enterprise models (more warp capacity, etc) or the inner workings of the Borg Continuum?

Anyone? Anyone? I’ll be here when you’re ready! 😛

STAR TREK??? Star Trek was cool!👍 I started watching that when I was probably…8 or 9? I loved it!

Star Trek will NOT hurt him! Be a big brother, not his parent. I assume he already has 1 or 2 of those already!

Violent video games are one thing (you shouldn’t be playing violent video games either), but Star Trek is OK.

My advice? Let your parents parent him, and you think of fun big brother stuff to do with him! Presumably your parents know what he is watching, so if they were concerned, they would do something about it. If they are not, let it go, and go do something else fun with your lil bro!👍
