Why not tell them how you really feel? If they are true friends they’ll understand, if not.

Ok, at a birthday party, one gift from a cousin was the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy. Neither my wife nor I are interested in reading it (not our “thing”). The cousin is asking how we are enjoying it. What is the best response, without hurting feelings?
The best response would have been to give it back immediately (not in front of other people) and tell them frankly that you aren’t going to read it.

At this point, that is probably still the best response.

You could say

“It’s not our sort of thing so we sold it and gave the money to a charity for the homeless”

🙂

I’d say something like:

“It burned nicely for 20 minutes!..We cooked marshmallows and enjoyed them thoroughly!
They went up much easier that the National Catholic Reporter…”
👍:clapping::rotfl:

I can just imagine the horrified faces.

:bigyikes:

Say, “I started it, but found it so awkward to read I had to put it down! Come on, man, I have a weak stomach!”

Be lighthearted about it.
I think this is the best overall response… honest and easy… 👍

Throw it out. Burn it. Preferably trash it. It is softcore porn and is harmful to your soul (if read). Tell Your cousin that it is not your genre of reading and that you won’t read it. However it is softcore porn and is not a good thing to read. I’m not being scrupulous, I’m being dead honest. It is porn and thus deserves to be thrown out or burnt. I am adamantly against this kind of thing. St. Alphonus Liguori has this to say about reading GOOD spiritual books:

“Without good books and spiritual reading, it will be morally impossible to save our souls.” - St. Alphonsus Liguori

I hope that an atheist endorsement of this answer doesn’t make the OP rethink using it, but I really love this response. It’s honest, lighthearted, and gives the gift-giver the benefit of the doubt.

Why would someone give you pornography for a gift? And why would you be uncomfortable telling someone you would prefer not to receive pornography in the future?

It’s not like they simply gave you a type of book you are not interested in-- a crime novel when you prefer cookbooks-- they gave you PORN.
Agreed. The book is porn. It’s the same as if they gave you a Playboy.

I just don’t get why someone would have to say I read PART of it and didn’t like it. The OP did not say they read any of it at all. Are we all so worried to stand up for our faith and beliefs that we must lie and say we TRIED the immorality and did not care for it!?

Would you do the same for a porno DVD. “Well, we watched 15 minutes and did not like it.” Or would you just inform the person who gave it to you that you are not interested in that.

Honestly I think saying “I appreciate the thought” is overboard.
I also think it odd that they are following up on it.
If it were my cousin I would say I dont like that kind of thing and if they want to swing, I’m not into that either…😃

I’d probably just say that I hadn’t read it yet. If they ask again, I’d repeat, and they might get the hint. If they were actually forward enough to ask me why, I would tell them directly that I had heard enough about the book that I didn’t really feel comfortable reading it, and take it from there. But any polite person who doesn’t want to hear a hard answer would know better than to ask. If they are really forward about it, I wouldn’t have a problem continuing the conversation and telling them my opinion of the dangers of reading such books. But I would plan a respectful, non abrasive explanation ahead of time in the interest of not sounding too judgmental (given they read and liked it, they would obviously be defensive). Being more direct right off the bat might be a better choice, but I am not all that great at doing so on the spot.

I had a Catholic friend recommend these to me recently. It wasn’t the sort of person I expected to hear that from and I debated for a second on how to respond. At first I leaned toward making a joke of it or being less than honest to avoid upsetting them but finally decided to be completely honest with them. I said, “Sorry, but I don’t read porn.” This led to a minor argument, but I felt better afterward since they eventually saw my point, agreed that reading them wasn’t a very Christian thing to do (although I don’t think it deterred them from being open to reading similar things in the future) and they said they wouldn’t recommend anything like this to me again.
