Well there are two different situations at play here. And there is a difference between merely attending Mass and actually serving at Mass, for example as a reader and Lay Eucharistic Minister.
Men and women showing up straight from work to attend Mass is not the issue. I’m fine with seeing Cops in uniform, nurses and doctors in scrubs, construction workers in jeans etc etc.
This is about men showing up in football jerseys and sandals and wearing ball caps with sunglasses or women in shorts that are barely 1/4 of the way down the thigh and wearing a shirt that shows their stomach.
The inappropriate part isn’t just the clothes, but instead had to do with their view of why they wore what they did. I’m sure if we did a poll and asked people what they should wear to a wedding or a funeral; shorts, sandals, yoga pants, and ripped jeans probably wouldn’t make the cut.
So there’s nothing wrong with teaching people how they should be dressing to attend Mass. Your financial status shouldn’t dictate your willingness to at least dress modestly and respectfully.
