My husband used to be very impatient with any setbacks, and things like traffic backed up or a flat tire used to send him into orbit. I always told him, maybe God’s holding us up for a reason, but he’d still get upset. Then one time, while we were traveling, our car started acting funny. We were on a long stretch of highwary, we had a long way to go and the sun was starting to set. He pulled over to see if he could find the problem, but nothing seemed to be wrong. After about twenty minutes, he started to lose his temper, but then I said, “Oh, honey, look at the sky!” He stopped and for the next ten minutes we watched the most beautiful sunset… the sky was ablaze in gold, red, lavender and rose. He told me that his older sister, who had been killed by a drunk driver while walking home when she was 13, used to love sunset skies like that. Well, we got back in the car and prayed we would get to our destination before it conked out. The car ran perfectly! We couldn’t understand it. Then, thirty minutes down the road, we came upon a slew of emergency vehicles and a horrendous car wreck. My husband turned pale, then he looked and me and said, “Let’s say a prayer of thanksgiving… I think my sister stopped us back there so we wouldn’t get into an accident!”
He doesn’t get so impatient anymore. Everytime there’s a delay or detour, he says, God’s doing this for a reason, so I won’t complain.
