TURKISH DELIGHT

Ingredients
  • 8 leaves gelatine
  • 500g (1lb) granulated sugar
  • Few drops of rosewater
  • Few drops of pink liquid food colouring
  • 2 level tbsp icing sugar
  • 1 level tbsp cornflour
  • 18cm (7in) square sandwich tin
Method
  • Pour 300ml (½ pint) water into a pan and add the gelatine leaves, breaking them in half, if necessary, so that they fit. Leave the gelatine to bloom for about 5 mins, then place the pan on a low heat and stir gently until the gelatine melts. Add the sugar and stir until it has dissolved. Increase the heat and bring the mixture to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer it gently for 20 mins.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and stir in rose water and food colouring, until it’s pale pink. Wet the sandwich tin with cold water, then pour in the rose syrup. Leave this in a cool place to set overnight.
  • Sift the icing sugar and cornflour together onto a plate or board. Ease the set Turkish Delight out of the tin on to the icing-sugar mixture. Use a long knife with a damp blade to cut the jelly into 2.5-3cm (1-1¼in) squares. Coat all cut surfaces in the powder mixture.
  • Store in a cardboard box, lined with baking parchment, in a single layer, dusted with a little extra icing-sugar mixture. Keep in a cool, dry place, but not in the fridge, for up to 1 week. DO NOT FREEZE

Hi Morgan,

It’s nice to see you here. 🙂

I agree with you.

Apple Cider Vinegar especially gives a nice bit of a tart flavor to your dish when you use it.

We used to add a Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar to our chile-it adds flavor and is a natural meat tenderizer.

A bit added to cooked spinach was the norm during my childhood years. Now, I intersperse this recipe with one that involves sauteeing the spinach in butter and adding a small pinch of nutmeg.

Nutmeg is very tasty on spinach.

My mom used to put some in mashed potatoes.

Hi @jeannetherese,

Thanks for these tips using the Cider vinegar and the nutmeg, too. I wouldn’t think about putting nutmeg in spinach, but it sounds good!

Thanks for your cooking tips too, @F_Marturana !

It’s nice to see both of you here, too. ❤️

I really enjoy reading what everyone has to share, as I didn’t know some of these tips, so I’m learning some new things. 😀

I had a carrot and sweet potato smoothie that was ruined by too much nutmeg and ginger. I like those spices, but a little goes a long way.

I understand…

I’ve had that happen with recipes that use cloves and cardamom. Those are great spices. However, I’ve learned to cut back a bit sometimes when a recipe uses those spices, just due to my own personal preferences.

I love spices, but with some of them, a little goes a long way, especially in a drink. I had a pumpkin muffin the other day that would have benefited greatly from more spice! Maybe the problem is me! 😁

I’m not much of a cook, but I do make blueberry chutney at Christmastime that is delicious with cheese, especially brie. It has frozen blueberries, brown sugar, onion, grated ginger, etc. I love the ginger in that, but I have to be careful not to add too much.

I’m looking forward to getting recipes and tips from this thread! I don’t have too much to post right now. Tonight we’re having pizza that I’m making with leftover salami, pepperoni, and ham that I had from making italian subs a couple of days ago.

Jiffy Mix Fruit Magic Recipe

My Notes:
This is a recipe that turns out like a fruit cobbler or like a “dump cake.”

This recipe also calls for a small box of Jiffy Golden Yellow Cake Mix.

Jiffy Mixes can usually be found on their website, and also at Walmart stores. They are a product commonly found in the Midwest Region of the U.S. You can also find them on Amazon, as well.

The Jiffy website indicates that you can also use Jiffy White Cake Mix, instead of Yellow.

This is good serve with whipped cream, whipped topping, or vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients:

1 pkg. “JIFFY” cake mix Golden Yellow Cake Mix
1 can (21 oz) pie filling
1/4 cup margarine or butter, softened
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Select your favorite pie filling and spread into an ungreased 8” square pan.

Combine cake mix and nuts (optional).

Cut in margarine or butter until crumbly.

Sprinkle over top of pie filling.

Bake 45 – 50 minutes .

Ooh, this sounds good, it seems like it makes a smaller amount than all the recipes I have seen. Sometimes, it’s just two much for 2 or 3 people. Thanks OGM!

You’re very welcome!

I make this routinely for my husband and me. We get several servings out of it, for just the two of us, but this can also easily feed a family or be brought to a pot luck or a family gathering. It’s so easy to make, too. That’s what I like about it. These days, I’m looking for easy meals to put together, and easy desserts, too.

I have been cooking and baking for a really long time, and sometimes you just don’t want to fuss too much. At least, I don’t all of the time. 😉 😁
