Reciting the Creed During Mass

For years Canada has had an indult to use the Apostles Creed at Mass and it’s almost always used when Mass is celebrated in English. OTOH, I’ve most often heard the Nicene when Mass was celebrated in French.

But IIRC, the rule on the use of the Apostles Creed at Mass has changed and it can now be used instead of the Nicene Creed anywhere.
In paragraph 2, are you still taking about Canada? Becuase in the US, only the Nicene Creed may be used (exception for Masses with children). If that was changed in the US, I missed that, and haven’t been able to verify it.

It’s been the rule since the new edition of the Roman Missal – we just don’t have it in English yet. Which leads to the question "If it’s perfectly valid to recite the Apostles Creed instead of the Nicene Creed in Latin and in any other language that already has the Missal translated, is it also valid to do so in English or must we wait for the official translation to go into effect?

From the USCCB website on the translation of the Ordinary of Mass:
  1. Instead of the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, especially during Lent and Easter time, the baptismal Symbol of the Roman Church, known as the Apostles’ Creed, may be used.

Thanks. I hadn’t been aware of that until reading it here.

We must wait for the actual liturgical books to be published for our use. A the present moment, using the new Missal is strictly forbidden (in English in the US). Permission for its use has very specifically been withheld (pending publication).

On the other hand, the “typical edition” which is the original Latin printing of the Missal (and intended for use worldwide) can be used anywhere in the world, BUT it cannot be mixed with the current liturgical books in the vernacular in any way.

Incidentally, I strongly suggest that readers here visit the USCCB website at www.usccb.org and read the advance study text of the new translation. It is refreshing and full of hope. Unfortunately, it’s also 40 years too late.
