Reconsidering Polygamy???

I read in a Muslim article that the Church is considering allowing polygamy in Africa. I was surprised and searched around but only found this.

This article doesn’t mention the Church but does show that polygamy is being considered by Africans.

Does anyone know if this is true? Is the Church considering allowing polygamy in Africa?

And nobody’s updated wiki to the contrary Wikipedia still states that we’re against it If you can’t trust Wiki who can you trust? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygamy

It would rank up there with them allowing royal consorts again? Was that in years 100-1000? and perhaps beyond? Once upon a time, bishops were married or had consorts…

This can’t be true. As an African I can tell that at least until I left some years ago, for my knowledge this issue (Church allowing polygamy) was never present in any diocese conference report or bishops letters.

Also, wouldn’t it be very unlikely for the Church consider polygamy only for African continent and not for the rest of the world? (Ahh… Muslim article )

What the Church may be dealing with, is how to evangelize those communities with higher levels of polygamy. It can be the source of some clash with local traditions if not properly addressed, so the people involved in missions in those areas need to be well prepared.

But no generalization can be made, as different countries have different views in polygamy. In my country even the many Muslims are monogamous. It is true that polygamy is prohibited by the law, but nobody gets arrested and some people following the tradition has multiple wives. Yet, only the first wife is recognized.

But this is not a common topic any more, at least in my country and neighbours, so I doubt that it would be as well of such importance in the Church.

It is my experience that most “news items” related to the Catholic Church that sound weird, end up being hooey.

It is rather unfortunate, because most people read it, don’t bother checking the credibility of the source and end up having this misconception about the Catholic Church…
