What do you think about this homily? I think the Archbishop is a little bit off though in this part:

“As believers, our hope for a better world is rooted in our faith that God will help us make this happen. Faith is the source of our perennial optimism and our social activism and involvement. If we work and work hard enough, God will be with us to bring about that world of peace, justice, understanding, wisdom, kindness, respect and love that we call His kingdom coming to be on earth.”

You can have a more just kind world or whatever, but a perfect world is impossible. Just my opinion.

Perfection is something we must all strive for, otherwise Jesus would never have said, “Be you therefore perfect (holy), as also your heavenly Father is perfect (holy).” Matt 5:48

But the world will never be prefect.

I think that it was a nice step away from the religious indifference some bishops sometimes suggest.

He was saying the perfect world will come at the end of time, which of course God will make happen:

“…that we call His kingdom coming to be on earth.”

Doesn’t sound to me like he’s saying anything that isn’t taught in Gaudium et Spes.

I was confirmed by Bishop Wuerl. 🙂 He is also known as being faithful to the teachings of the Church. He is not a rogue bishop. So, I think you are misunderstanding his homily. Even though we know perfection on earth is not possible, we should still strive to create a society as close to that model as is humanly possible. That’s what I get from his homily anyway.

Let’s all say a prayer for Bishop Wuerl. We will see an end to abortion when Bishops and priests deny pro-abortionists communion and enact canon law 915.

I was too. 1993

I am sure that holiness is an aspect of perfect, but in my studies, the Hebrew word used for “perfect” in this verse is something like “all that you can be”. If that is the case, the bishop is correct, in that we will not obtain the kind of perfect that is God’s, and only His, but the kind of perfection that He made us for, which is to love Him and one another. WHenever we put forward this belief in our outward actions, we spread it out to the world, and thus tip the balance of evil and good towards the good, which is what God said of the world, and mankind in the first words of the bible.
