References to or Quotes from Deuterocanonical Books in the New Testament

Someone had asked a while back about references to the Deuterocanonical books in the New Testament or even of direct quotes. I can’t find the thread so I thought I would post these two that I came across, Sirach 29 and Wisdom 7.

Jesus references Sirach 29 when teaches about almsgiving and detachment from love of material goods.

*When Jesus heard this he said to him, “There is still one thing left for you: sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Luke 18:22)

Dispose of your treasure according to the commandments of the Most High,
and that will profit you more than the gold.
Store up almsgiving in your treasury,
and it will save you from every evil.
(Sirach 29:11)*

The opening paragraph of the book of Hebrews is called the Exordium.

In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets; but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature, upholding the universe by his word of power. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has obtained is more excellent than theirs. (Hebrews 1:1-4)

The Exordium is theologically rich and to me is one of the most beatiful passages in the Bible. Many Biblical scholars believe that several themes in the Exordium are direct references to Wisdom 7 and theological completions of themes introduced there.

For she is a breath of the power of God,
and a pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty;
therefore nothing defiled gains entrance into her.
For she is a reflection of eternal light,
a spotless mirror of the working of God,
and an image of his goodness.
(Wisdom 7:25-26)

The parallels are striking.

Breath of the power of God…Upholding the universe by his word of power.
Pure emination of the glory of the Almighty…Reflects the glory of God.
Image of his goodness…Bears the very stamp of his nature
Nothing defiled gains entrance…made purification for sins

I just wanted to point these out in case anyone was interested. If anyone has any others, please post.

There is one that is enriched by living sparingly, and this is the portion of his reward. In that he saith: I have found me rest, and now I will eat of my goods alone: And he knoweth not what time shall pass, and that death approacheth, and that he must leave all to others, and shall die.

“The distinguished (Anglican) patristic scholar Henry Chadwick has claimed that in Matthew 11:28 Jesus was directly quoting Sirach 51:27,[14] as well as comparing Matthew 6:12 “And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” (KJV) with Sirach 28:2 “Forgive your neighbor a wrong, and then, when you petition, your sins will be pardoned.”[14](Some other translations, such as the New Revised Standard Version, read, for Matthew 6:12, “And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespassed against us.”)”
