Nick,

From what I have seen, most of the people who have posted on here have your best interests at heart. Unfortunately, none of us truly know your situation and what your relationship with your girlfriend is like.

I am married to a Protestant, and I have seen first-hand some of the difficulties that are faced between Catholics and Protestants when they marry. Unlike many others who have posted here, however, I love my husband more than anyone else on earth, and I would marry him again in a heartbeat. He does not make belittling comments or hold my faith against me in any way. We have both accepted that we disagree on certain points, and we love each other for the faith we have. And while I pray that he will see the truth of the Catholic faith, I cannot expect that he will convert. One thing you learn is that you cannot expect your spouse to change. It will only happen with God’s intervention if He wills it.

My marriage has helped me grow in my own Catholic faith, understanding what I believe as a Catholic and why I don’t believe what Protestants teach. This would not have happened without my husband. Personally, I have grown in my faith more than I ever would have without him.

In your relationship you need to make sure that you discuss what you expect out of a relationship and out of marriage. My husband knew in our first month of dating that I would not go to church alone for the rest of my life. We created a compromise from the beginning and now attend two churches each Sunday. Some feel this can’t be sustained, but I disagree. If it is important to you, it will happen.

I will say that the decision should be taken seriously. It is possible, however, to have a healthy, happy, faithful marriage when marrying outside of your Catholic faith.

Here are some tips from me:
  1. Avoid talking about your exes in front of your gf. Even if your ex was the love of your life, it’s disrespectful. Only talk about her if your gf asks, dont bring her up randomly. My bf at the moment has a lot of stuff lying around from his ex …like little notes and things from her. It makes me feel bad. Throw them out if you can, or if you want to keep it for sentimental purposes, hide them!!
  2. Msg OR call her at least once a day. Every time my bf msgs or calls me, it always makes me smile because I know he’s thinking of me. Even a little msg before you go to bed saying “sweet dreams” or a msg in the morning wishing her a good day =) And if you’re worried about being too clingy, perhaps alternate the call and the msg. For example, one day call her before you go to bed and have a phone conversation and the next day msg but dont call

My Grandfather was engaged to be married to a lady, however when he realised that she would never agree to bring their children up as Catholics he broke it off.

Then he met my Grandmother, who was and is Catholic and they had six children of which 5 remain practising Catholics and 1 son who is now a Methodist.

It’s all about having the strength to follow God’s plan for you.

That’s my two cents.🤷

All the best.👍
