I am a 26 year old man, in a relationship with a catholic women, I am an Athiest. I have found it the most fulfilling and connective experience that I have ever been in. I am a good man and I live by a strict moral code, and although I cannot see inside of her head, she tells me she is very happy.
She recently put the breaks on all aspect of the physical with our relationship. She already went farther than some of you (from reading other posts) would have liked with me.
I am willing to wait till marriage for sex, with a little work on my part I can even get to the point where I can accept no physically sexual contact at all.
Here is the issue, and a lot of it has to do with my previous experiences with relationships with women.
When she brought this up in conversation it was a serious blow to my ego. It was effectively saying to me that she, (my girlfriend) is not sexually attracted to me, that she does not trust me, that she want to either slow things down or that she want to subtly end the relationship by making me break up with her. That may not have been how she meant it, but its pretty much what she said, and its sure as heck how I felt.
However I made no attempt to convince her, or make an argument for one thing or the other. I respect her and her beliefs far to much to do that. I see that many of you point out that athiests guys are “only out for one thing”, or “will not wait”, or say they “will” and then dont or try and logic there way into her pants, or convince or whatever. I did none of these things.
I did however ask her what I did wrong, she said “nothing” I asked her if I was not a good man, she said I was. I asked her if I had ever pressured her into doing anything ever, she admitted I had not.
Right now I feel unwanted, and unappreciated. I feel undesirable and ugly, I feel that I was taken as a mark for a guy to settle down with were there was not real attraction. I feel that I was perhaps even seen as a sucker for her to take a “bad boy” for a time. (not really a bad boy, (I drive motorcycles, and have traveled the world and other things ect.)
She said a bunch of things telling me it was not like that and that she really cared about me. And that in her past relationship she had slept with the guy, but ended up regretting it and breaking up with him, because she did not really like him and only stayed so long because they had already been physical. And then said that she did not want to sleep with just anyone because of how that kills your soul.
Then I felt even worse, here I though I was the strong but caring communicative compassionate guy, and now I am less then “just anyone”, infact according to her logic she is not being physical with me because she cares actually likes me, but may be been if she did not really like me?
Now look, I see this women as marriage potential, or I would not be in a relationship with her. I dont mess around (I mean, you guys might call it that, but it was consensual sex in committed monogamous relationships where I saw the potential for long term) . AND this came out of the blue, I assumed no sex before marriage but she let things escalate and then stopped them…
K so:
in my past relationships when the physical stopped it meant there were problems, like REAL problems. She claims its the opposite, I cannot wrap my head around that.
In the past it meant she was possibly trying to **** me off to the point where I would end it so she did not have to. She claims she is serious about us.
She said she did not know why I felt this way, I told her its because the women I am in a relationship with just put me in the friend zone. She in my eyes wants to be “just friends”
I tell her that I dont mind waiting, but no physical affection makes me fear a sexless, passionless marriage. She assures me I dont have to worry about that, but makes not explanation why.
She then says that its her task now to find other ways to show me I am appreciated. Today that consisted of holding my hand and then not kissing me when our great (in my opinion) platonic afternoon out together ended.
I feel like a dog being led out to the woods and my owner is holding a shotgun and I think I am going for a walk.
Now my question to you, the forums,
Does she want a relationship with me?
Does she care about me?
Is she just testing me?
What does she want?
How do you have a completely non physical relationship with someone you had a +physical relationship with before?
What do people do to continue to foster connection while being non physical?
Do I get to kiss my girlfriend again?
Please help me! I am serious about this relationship and this women. I am prob. going to go and see a priest this week for more help. I am really lost here.
EDIT:
And one add on here, please before casting me off as hopeless because of my beliefs know this, I have gone through the forums, I have not ever, not will I ever cause some of the grief I read about. I am trying to do the right thing by both me and her here. and I am seeking understanding of her and her way of thinking.
