I was researching the NIV version to try and show my girl friend who is non-denominational Christian the issues with the NIV. I compared the NIV, King James (KJV), New World Translation, (NWT, the jehovahs Bible), the Douay Rheims, (DRB) and the New American Bible (NAB), New American Standard Bible (NASB) with this passage of Isaiah 14:12.

NIV "How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! "

NASB “How you have fallen from heaven,O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations!”

NAB “How you have fallen from heavens,O morning star, son of the dawn! how are you cut down to the ground, You who mowed down the nations!”

NWT “O how you have fallen from heaven, you shining one, son of the dawn! How you have been cut down to the earth, you who were disabling the nations!”

DRB “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, who didst rise in the morning? how art thou fallen to the earth, that didst wound the nations?”

KJV "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

I want to know what the #$%@! is going on here. Since in Rev 22:16 is says Jesus is the morning star. NAB, NASB, KJV, DRB, NWT, NIV all confirm. It looks to me that the NAB, NASB, NWT, and NIV all contradict themselves this way and grant the devil the same title of Jesus giving both equal status or something and this is not right. The NAB is supposed to be the Catholic Bible and me finding this is disconcerting. Yes I understand jehovahs is a cult, their translation is here for emphasis only.

I want to know what Bible to use, but I want to know which one is the most accurate english version so I can read Scripture how it should be.

Lucifer is a good name and designation.
The devil lost it when he fell.
It is simple.

It is like a general loosing his position in the royal army…

God bless

so your saying, the devil was the morning star, then lost position when he went bad and then Jesus took over the the position of morning star? if that interpretation is exactly what you mean then this makes no sense whatsoever to me and I have never seen the name lucifer as a title to be desirable.

Lucifer means “Light”, and he was a very powerful archangel.

He turned his back on God, betrayed God, when he wanted to be more powerful than God.

I believe the “light” of his name may be why he was called the morning star.

Instead of comparing translations, perhaps some digging into other sources (besides CAF:D) would help explain it.

PS Please share whatever you find out, this is interesting.

I use the RSV-2CE, and the passage from Isaiah reads;
'How you are fall from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low!

the passage from Revelation reads:
“I Jesus have sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root of the offspring of David, the bright morning star.”

It depends on what manuscript of the Old Testament is used for the translation, the Septuagint (which one) or the Massoretic text. Then accuracy is in the eyes of the different translators (what is the most accurate English translation for a Hebrew or Greek word that might have multiple meanings). That is why when doing serious study it is best to use multiple translations.

from Is 14:12
הֵילֵל בֶּן־שָׁחַר

הֵילֵל shining one / morning star / crescent moon / day-star / Lucifer
(this word ‘hey-lel’ is only used once in OT, maybe that’s why the variation)

בֶּן־שָׁחַר son of the dawn

Rev 22:16
ὁ ἀστὴρ ὁ λαμπρός, ὁ πρωινός.
the star the bright the morning

The name “Lucifer” means “light-bringer.” Remember that once, Lucifer was among the greatest of God’s angels. Remember, that the glory of the angels is a reflection of God’s glory - the Seraphim are said to shine because they are always so close to God.

So, the Devil, once called Lucifer, once the closest to God (thus Christ, from whom he reflected the “bright and morning Star”) when he fell naturally could not reflect the Light of God any longer. (I think it was St. Michael who led the force to cast Satan down).

Remember: our connotation for the name Lucifer comes from the application of the name to Satan. The name itself is a very glorious name!

Also, this is just my opinion, but it seems that that particular passage prefigures Christ greatly. The one who once reflected His light so brilliantly (and thus be called by the psalmist for his close association with Christ) and cast down forcefully, would soon be followed by the Light Himself come down willfully.

I hope that all I have said is in line with the Holy Catholic Church. If not, I wish for correction.

We are not called to be scribes. What did our Lord say about scribes?

I have a dozen different Bibles. I compare and contrast, and have my favorite (NASB) because I love the poetry, not because I love to argue.

In the Bible Priests are also “scribes” and there are hundreds of positive statements about priests in scripture you are overlooking.
