Relic of cross, stolen from Boston church, recovered in Vermont

A splinter of wood that Catholics consider to be a relic of the cross on which Jesus was crucified, and that was stolen from the Cathedral of the Holy Cross earlier this summer, has been recovered in Vermont, the Archdiocese of Boston confirmed today.
The relic, which Boston Catholics have venerated since it was brought here in the late 18th century from France.
"Our prayers have been answered as the Relic of the True Cross has been recovered. We are grateful for the great work of the Boston Police Department in their search for the relic,’’ the archdiocese said in a statement today. “Their professional and diligent work made this effort successful. We also extend our appreciation to the Vermont State Police who assisted in the recovery effort. God has blessed us with His love and capacity to forgive. We prayerfully carry on His call for forgiveness for those responsible.”

How nice! 👍 A Catholic Church in my area known as Our Lady of Hope used (don’t know if they still have it or not) to have a relic of the True Cross. It was a small splinter of wood from the cross. I found it to be rather difficult to see but it was still interesting. 🙂

I actually have one in my living room. It came from a parish in the Netherlands that was closing down.

I aquired in when I was in the Diaconate program was was looking for old style vestments. The relic and it’s reliquary were simply sitting in a diocesan ‘warehouse’ and they were offering it to clergy (and clergy canidates)

The reliquary was of a unique shape, as it was originally embedded in the altar. So, as a Christmas present, my wife made a large wooden cross with a opening for the reliquary.

The relic is two small slivers in the center ( is a cross form). The seal on the back is intact and is Cardinal Louis de Bonald of Lyon - mid-late 1800’s
