Relic of True Cross stolen from Cathedral

Spokesman for the Archdiocese of Boston, Terrence Donilon, released the following statement Monday July 12:

Relic of the True Cross Stolen from the Cathedral of the Holy Cross

On Thursday, July 1, staff from the Cathedral of the Holy Cross learned that the relic of the true Cross was stolen from the Cathedral’s Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Boston Police were immediately notified and an investigation was begun to determine who might be responsible. That investigation continues.

The relic of the true Cross is an important sacramental that helps Christians contemplate the crucified Savior and the great suffering he endured for the salvation of the world. The true Cross was discovered in the fourth century, and since then its particles have been diffused to the Church throughout the world. The Cathedral’s relic of the true Cross was brought from France in the Nineteenth Century and given to Bishop Cheverus, Boston’s first Bishop.

In the Christian faith, the Cross of Christ is an expression of the triumph of Christ over the powers of darkness. Fr. Kevin O’Leary, the Rector of the Cathedral, added: “We are deeply troubled that this sacred relic was stolen, and we pray for those responsible. We ask the faithful of the Archdiocese of Boston to join the Cathedral’s parishioners in praying every day for its return.”

So who was responsible for guarding this relic worth far more than all the gold in Fort Knox?
 
This is a hate crime, and I don’t throw that around lightly. There is no reason to steal a piece of wood venerated by a religion except out of anger or hate for that religion. We need to pray both for the return of the relic, and for the thief, for whatever in his or her mind or past that caused them to commit this act.
 
Well the good news is that there’s millions of pieces of the “true cross” still floating out there in the world. You can probably get another on ebay…:rolleyes:
 
If all the pieces of the “True Cross” were collected; it would stretch to the moon! We should focus on Jesus; not false symbols!
 
Actually we’d only have about a square foot, but that’s beside the point. I don’t care if it isn’t the true cross, the fact is what it represent and the action committed.

Signs and symbols are part of my faith as a Catholic, and they help me to focus on Christ. Relics, rosaries, incense and holy water, bring it on! Christ knew human nature-as Catholics we worship with our entire bodies. Let heretics and those who’d place a limit on God stay trapped within their little minds, I worship with sight, smell, touch and taste.

Now someone, obviously someone who needs prayers as I said before, has committed a crime against Mother Church and we have Catholics saying “who cares”? I do. This relic has been venerated and brought people closer to Christ for years. Someone stole it. I for one think that’s something worth getting upset about and worth praying over.

No doubt , that the person who stole this will sell it on ebay!
 
How awful! I’ll be praying that the relic is recovered quickly. My parish also has a relic of the True Cross…documented and certified by several bishops. There are real relics out there, and they deserve our respect as physical reminders of Christ’s sacrifice. Our pastor is fond of reminding us that the relic has been “soaked in the blood of Christ”.

“Conflicting with this is the finding of Rohault de Fleury, who, in his Mémoire sur les instruments de la Passion 1870 made a study of the relics in reference to the criticisms of Calvin and Erasmus. He drew up a catalogue of all known relics of the True Cross showing that, in spite of what various authors have claimed, the fragments of the Cross brought together again would not reach one-third that of a cross which has been supposed to have been three or four meters in height, with transverse branch of two meters wide, proportions not at all abnormal. He calculated: supposing the Cross to have been of pine-wood (based on his microscopic analysis of the fragments) and giving it a weight of about seventy-five kilograms, we find the original volume of the cross to be .178 cubic meters. The total known volume of known relics of the True Cross, according to his catalogue, amounts to approximately .004 cubic meters (more specifically 3,942,000 cubic millimeters), leaving a volume of .174 cubic meters lost, destroyed, or otherwise unaccounted for.”
