(CBS) CHICAGO An unholy act took place at one of Chicago’s oldest houses of worship. Burglars ransacked this Near North Side church, stealing historic items held dear by the faithful.
The crooks made off with priceless relics that have great sentimental value to a parish that survived the Great Chicago Fire.
St. Joseph is located in the 1100 block of North Orleans. CBS 2’s Suzanne LeMignot reports on why this crime is so hurtful.
“This was a place where parishioners would come just to pray by the relics,” said Pastor Pat Lee at St. Joseph Church
Lee stands in front of a reliquarium. The glass that protected it’s sacred contents is shattered.
“My heart sunk when I saw those things missing,” Lee said.
The partial remains of Saints Theresa the Little Flower and Mother Cabrini, who worked at the parish and was the first American woman to be canonized a saint, were taken. Each relic was encased in gold and adorned with gems.
“I’m sure that’s what they wanted were the boxes and the settings, but they don’t understand how sacred the relics are to us,” Lee said.
Pastor Pat says someone burglarized the recently renovated church twice. Saturday morning, three life-size candlesticks were taken. The brass, onyx, marble and gold-plated candle holders were 100 years old.
“The gentleman who fashioned them for us estimated their worth to be over $5,000 each,” Lee said.
It was some time between Sunday night and Monday morning when the thief or thieves broke into the reliquarium. A seven-foot bronze processional cross, and a gold-plated jewel-adorned monstrance, displaying the Eucharist, was also taken.
Numerous bronze candelabras also vanished from cupboards in this back room. Pastor Pat hopes the thief or thieves will do the right thing.
“We won’t even ask questions, just bring it back. It means a great deal to us,” Lee said.
Pastor Pat says part of the church renovation includes cameras placed all around the exterior of the building and a security system, so that a thief will think twice about stealing from the house of worship again.
