Religion: No Hooters shirts in Mass, please

Even I don’t wear Hooters shirts to mass. Ramones, Pearl Jam, Dead Kennedys-that’s another story.

I’ve got to know about the Dead Kennedy’s shirt… was it the FrankenChrist shirt or the Too Drunk to… t-shirt that you wore to mass?

The point was trying to be made that the Protestants consider church to be God’s house. Even though some may be poor, they show deference toward all the things of God, even in the way they dress for their Sunday worship, i.e., “take off your sandals for you are on holy ground.” Perhaps we could be taught a lesson by their good example.

Not all Protestants consider that nor do they show deference in how they dress for Sunday. I spent 20+ years as a protestant. Have you ever been to a Sunday NFL service? Or listened to the preacher while sipping your latte? Well, I have…in a protestant church. When we went to one protestant church when we moved, and all we had were our jeans unpacked…we were looked upon with a look of disdain…and so we moved on.

You say, “fancy suits and fancy dresses.” No one is asking anyone to wear the finest money can buy to go to Mass in. A suit or dress would be what is appropriate, something other than the casual.

You may disagree, but IMO, coming to Mass dressed casually is to denigrate the Real Presence even if it doesn’t out and out deny it.

Why would there be no discussion of what is appropriate to wear to Mass 30 or 40 years ago, but now, the “it’s all about me” bunch want to argue about how much they can get away with - no bras, cut-off jeans, “crack-showing” pants, flip-flops, “wife-beater” undershirts? Oh, yes, they are the ones packing the Adoration Chapel. NOT!

It’s your opinion that coming to Mass dressed casually is to denigrate the Real Presence…to which you are entitled to that opinion. It doesn’t make it so. And I’m taking casual by your definition to mean something other than a suit or a dress?

It may suprise you but 30 years ago when I was a kid at Mass…they didn’t wear suits and ties then either:shrug: and if you were to go to my parish in a suit or tie…you would stick out…not that anyone would look down on you or assume your motives for that. In my daily parish as well…I wear dockers/blouse or sweater…it’s what I wear to work and I’m on my lunch break…which only allows me enough time to get there and back and maybe 5 minutes to eat after. We may see one or two people in a suit or shirt and tie…once in a while…and the parish is only a block or two away from the Capitol building…

But don’t assume casual to mean (per your words) “the “it’s all about me” bunch want to argue about how much they can get away with - no bras, cut-off jeans, “crack-showing” pants, flip-flops, “wife-beater” undershirts.” I don’t honestly think ANYONE here is advocating for this stuff…

I go to Mass in jeans sometimes (dark, clean, modest) and I usually wear them to perpetual adoration every week.

Maybe she was with the guy in our church wearing the JIM BEAN tee also at Mass. Or the guy who wore the cap into Mass and finally an usher had the courage to tell him to remove it.

Ever watch SAY YES TO THE DRESS ? Plunging necklines, and no sleeves on a wedding dress. And the corset wedding gown that looks like a Maidenform ad with a long billowing gown. I cringe everytime I hear them say that the wedding will be in a Catholic Church. Even the male host of the show has remarked that some gowns are rather risque for that. Maybe the priests should follow his example and ban some of these outrageous outfits.

Oh my gosh…I watch that all the time…usually talking at the TV. Now some of the sleeveless dresses can look modest…but you can always add a cap sleeve…and/or as I did 23 years ago…a modesty piece to not make it so low cut. I just don’t understand the see through corset dress You shouldn’t look like someone should be slipping you ones as you walk down the aisle

An even sadder commentary on that show is the number of people who have been living together for several years and THEN get married. What bugs me too is the number of people who do not get married in a church. What’s wrong with getting married in a church:shrug: When I got married, I had left the Catholic church (long story…formally defected…back…told my marriage was valid…but had convalidated anyway)…we still got married in a church.

As far as I can see this was the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church for 1900 years, up until Vatican II. Then all of a sudden they decided to change their teaching on this and let women ignore what Scripture says on this and to attend Church without veils.

I did not realize until recently there was scripture behind the female head covering. I think its a beautiful custom and tradition that I would have no issues with it returning to use more, and not just for Extra Ordinary Form Mass but at Ordinary Form too. There are plenty of choices for women who choose to cover if they are not comfortable with the lace mantilla like small dressy hats, berets, scarves, etc.

Regarding the recent posts mentioning people coming to Mass looking like they are going to go to the bar or a rock concert as an example, that really irritates me but I keep my uncharitable thoughts to myself. I just hope priests make mentions about a return to modesty and some sense of appropriate dress for Mass.

With reference to wearing hooters shirts, at least the top of the woman is covered, unlike the situation with the papal Mass at Papua New Guinea in 1984.

I saw a sign for a “Traditional Catholic Church” when I passed through a small town last Sunday. I looked them up online when I got home and found they were sedevacantists.

I would…first of all…I don’t wear a veil…it’s not required anymore. Second…I usually wear nothing but slacks or pants.

So this church would not be a place that I would go…I would find another parish.

Seriously there has got to be some middle ground between only skirts/dresses for women and Hooters shirts…somewhere!

I wouldn’t go to a CMRI church in any case because they’re self described sedevacantists.

I went to a diocesan parish that only offers the EF Mass. Only a few people wore jeans but it is possible they were either visitors or perhaps dressed that way because they had to go to work (or came from work) where jeans are often required/recommended (perhaps at the nearby auto plants). Everyone was dressed modestly and nicely which in turn helped with people being reverent & respectful. Conversations before/after Mass were not generally going in the sanctuary part of Mass but in other areas adjacent either.

It was nice to see most of the men/boys wearing suits (with / without a tie), and nearly all of the women wearing dresses (or skirts with nice modest tops). It would be nice to see that trickle down to OF Masses.
