Now we wait and see what our Church says on the matter. It would be exciting news. I suppose they will do testing to confirm these match the remains in Iran. Unlike those of us who received our faith from our parents, or had conversion experiences as adults (that would be me), or from a “born again experience” perhaps reinforced or initiated by exposure to Holy Scripture, St. John the Baptist received his experience of Christ from the womb… and was recognized by Christ Himself. He was brought high by his followers but humbly bowed low before Jesus. A singular figure in the history of the Church.

Not news. There were supposed to be relics in a place. They go to the place, and they find relics. Whoo, imagine that. It’s like going to the library and being surprised to find the book still where the catalog says it was.

What would make it interesting is if they compared DNA with other relics of St. John the Baptist throughout Christendom, did dating, etc. But of course a lot of that would mean destroying bits of the relics, so I doubt they’ll get into it that heavily unless they really don’t care. And it looks like they’re pretty interested in keeping the relics intact.

What was funny was the bit where the BBC explained that the Eastern Orthodox are more devoted to John the Baptist than any other kind of Christian… I know that’s not what they meant, but it is what they said. 🙂

More seriously, I didn’t like the jocular tone they took, when repeating the translation of the Bulgarian bishop’s remarks.

I heard once that John the Baptist was buried in Jerusalem under the Dome of the Rock. I don’t see how the authenticity of these relics can be verified. The age can be determined, but who can say who it is in that box? Given the many fake relics out there, I would need some solid evidence before I got too excited.

It’s all interesting, but, my belief in, and devotion to my Lord Jesus Christ will forever be dependent on my faith and not archeological finds.

Relics in shrines are nice, but my hope is to meet the saints, famous and obscure, at the glorious communion of the blessed, one day, in the Kingdom, as we all give unending praise to our God!

It is a curiostiy for sure but I thought that the head of John the Bapitst was given to Salome. Is there any record of what she did with it?
