Why scientists find climate change so hard to predict.

By Jerry Adler

Oct. 23, 2006 - In April, 1975, in an issue mostly taken up with stories about the collapse of the American-backed government of South Vietnam, NEWSWEEK published a small back-page article about a very different kind of disaster. Citing “ominous signs that the earth’s weather patterns have begun to change dramatically,” the magazine warned of an impending “drastic decline in food production.” Political disruptions stemming from food shortages could affect “just about every nation on earth.” Scientists urged governments to consider emergency action to head off the terrible threat of . . . well, if you had been following the climate-change debates at the time, you’d have known that the threat was: global cooling.

I remember that. I heard that other day that it hasn’t been this hot since 400 years ago. So, what made it so hot then? It’s a big hoax:thumbsup:

The earth has been much warmer (and more fertile) than it is today. It has also been much colder (and less friendly to life.)

And all that happened before Al Gore started jetting around, spewing “greenhouse gasses” into the atmosphere.😛

Whether the Earth is cooling or warming, depends on where you start counting from.

If you start the data from a year or time period in which the Earth was cooler, then obviously there will be a warming trend.

On the other hand, if you start tabulating data from a year in which the earth was warmer, then there will be a cooling trend.

The use of selective data and not reading EVERYTHING is / are the bane(s) of good science.

as I said recently on another thread, “next ice age is immanent” was being taught in my college geology and anthropology classes in the 70s as dogma, just as global warming is now. Whatever. There are fads in science and academia just as there are elsewhere in the popular culture.

But it is still Bush’s fault 😛

I do remember “global cooling” when I was in college in the early 80’s. I do find it ironcic (and a little sinister) that the SAME scientists that promoting “global cooling” are now promoting “global warming”. Kind of shows how reliable they are.

Of course there was an observed cooling and lots of speculation about it back then but there was never a general consensus that that necessarily meant that global cooling was on the way.

A non-technical news magazine is probably not the best source for historical perspectives on scientific thought.

Nor is a movie produced by a former Vice-President.😃

Well, I’ve not seen that particular movie nor do I read Newsweek so I guess I’m OK then. 😉

Mankind has always been trying to control the weather/climate and when we do we tend to do stupid things:(
The Toltec, a pre-Aztec civilization that thrived from the 10th to 12th centuries, had not been previously thought to have sacrificed children. But the ritualistic placement of the skeletons, cut marks on bones, and the presence of a figurine of Tlaloc led Gamboa to conclude the children had been sacrificed to bring rain.

I think my grandpa remembers global cooling. I think that’s what he was always on about when he’d tell me and my brother, “… and we had to walk to school in the snow every day!”

My father rode a horse to school – his mother would put him on it, and he would ride to the Crackerbox School in Logan County, Oklahoma. The teacher would take him down and put him back on when school was out. If he fell off, he would have to walk the rest of the way crying, with the horse following along behind.

I don’t recall how deep the snow drifts were.😃

Glad you posted this. As a boy, I remember that another ice age was right around the corner. Now, some 30 years later, we’re on the verge of a meltdown.

And it’s amazing how many people make fun of me for believing in God while they continue to put their faith in science.😃

You may remember that one hotly-advocated “solution” was to have the Air Force spread lamp black over the polar ice caps.

Aren’t you glad we didn’t listen to the boyos who were pushing that idea?😃

Two quick questions :
  1. Have you seen Al Gore’s movie An Inconvenient Truth ?.. and
  2. Have you ever read the content of the Kyoto Protocol that President Bush declined to sign ? [one of the few world leaders who would not sign !].:ouch:

In my youth, I prided myself on having a cast iron stomach – I have even drunk chicha made the old-fashioned way in Peru (and you don’t want to know what that is.)

My stomach is more delicate these days, and while I have read the Kyoto Protocol, I don’t think I could sit through all of “An Inconvenient Truth.”😃

  1. Yes, I have seen the movie produced, narrated and staring the man who made his fortune by helping to kill millions of people (he is a tobacco farmer) and who vociferously defends and promotes the murder of unborn children.
  2. Yes, I have read the document prepared by nations who desired to diminish the influence and economic power of the United States AND simultaneously keep the third world in a depressed and under-developed state to ensure a constant source of cheap labor through economic exploitation.
Any more questions?
