I turned it on this morning for distraction purposes as I am awaiting an important phonecall. First thing I saw was an argument between some people, one of whom was horridly rude, and another of whom identified as both a man and a woman. Then a little later, on a different channel, the news that a local council is going to use an injunction to keep pro life vigils away from an abortion centre, with an overwhelmingly pro abortion slant.
I often don’t watch because of the loose morals promoted in dramas and such like, but today I was a bit sickened by the madness of the world and thought that I don’t watch secular telly because it really is a parade of darkness and why would I put myself through that! I need a brain shower now.

I no longer watch tv, except for a few sports games here and there. I have really come to enjoy the silence of my home without the tv being background noise.

There’s a tv always on in my office at work and when I work the desk, I purposely turn it off to see how people react to the silence. My coworkers do not notice it right away but they will begin to play music or have any kind of background noise.

Our culture is addicted to noise. I credit Cardinal Sarah and his book, The Power of Silence, for encouraging me to really seek out silence in my everyday life.

I used to love the early-morning news shows like the Today show and also had evening favorites that I looked forward to each week. When our son grew old enough to pay attention to the TV news stories, the tv was turned off and it’s been a HUGE blessing to not have that constant feed of sickening stuff in our home. Some PBS Kids stuff is allowed, but I don’t even have the urge to turn the TV on to watch anything now, and I accidently threw away the remote control when I was cleaning out drawers and thought belonged to an old TV that we no longer own. 🙂

TV news has become almost entirely about pushing emotional buttons in the viewers. News reporting has always been about that to some degree, but it’s really ramped up in the last couple decades in a desperate attempt to engage audiences who can just as easily read current events on social media. I’d need a therapist if I watched that garbage on a regular basis.

When I was single, I didn’t even own a TV for two years. My parents thought this was odd and due to budgetary constraints, so they gave me one. I didn’t turn it on for a year.

Those were the three most serene and productive years of my adult life. I got so much more done, yet was far better rested then than now.

I’d love to get rid of the TV again but The Husband won’t hear of it. 😐 So I limit my viewing to documentaries and the occasional sports event. I’m not one to turn the TV on just to break silence.

I’ll join @Cthompson in recommending The Power of Silence. I’m nowhere near finishing it but what I’ve read so far has had a profound effect on my spiritual life. :+1:t3:

The best shows of the past few years:
  1. Game of Thrones
  2. Westworld
  3. Better Call Saul
  4. Mad Men
  5. Black Mirror

Game of Thrones? Seriously?! That’s an indefensible terrible show that absolutely no one should watch.

Season 6 was absolute brilliance, where the show overtook the books. Have you read them?

My husband watched every one bar mad men and he has a strong stomach. Even he said Game of Thrones got a bit boring after a while.

Anyway, this wasn’t about drama shows per se but about the stream of depressing yeauch that seems ubiquitous on current affairs and news and magazine shows. I appreciate you may not get the need for brain bleach after watching stuff like that, but when you hold yourself to a certain moral code, it can matter a great deal.

Do you have netflix? You might really enjoy Better Call Saul, it’s the most well written show out there. A prequel to Breaking Bad if you will.

Nope, no Netflix. Husband has seen both Breaking bad and Better Call Saul and prefers the second. I saw one episode of Better Call Saul to realize it wasn’t for me. I’m more of a Doctor Who girl when it comes to drama, but even that has limits for me now.

You might enjoy Black Mirror, it’s very dark but like a modern day tech twilight zone, but very thought provoking about dangers of technology.

Oo, no. Can’t abide Charlie Brooker. I appreciate the valiant effort to keep me entertained, but I have dvds aplenty if I ever have normal time to sit at length and watch the telly.

I much prefer the older shows. I watch “The Rifleman” every Saturday morning, and I am watching “The Andy Griffin Show” right now. Can’t recall the last time I watched any of the networks at prime time.

I don’t like Black Mirror and it should be totally my cup of tea but after the first episode, no. I am like the Prime Minister’s wife - just can’t look at it anymore.

I can’t imagine most members of a Catholic forum would get into this. I did watch the second episode so I don’t think all the eps are as vile as that one but, no.
