The Holy Father, after a process of dialogue between the Holy See and the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X, represented by its Superior General, Bishop Bernard Fellay, welcomed the request made by that Presule again in a letter dated 15 December 2008, also on behalf of the other three bishops of the Fraternity, Bishop Bernard Tissier de Mallerais, Bishop Richard Williamson and Alfonso Archbishop of Gallareta, to refer the excommunication in which they were incurred decades ago.

Because, in fact, made the consecration of bishops, on 30 June 1988, by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, without a pontifical mandate, the four mentioned prelates were incurred excommunication latae sententiae, formally declared by the Congregation for Bishops on 1 July 1988.

Bishop Bernard Fellay, said in the letter, showed clearly that the Holy Father: "We are always determined by the desire to remain Catholic and put all our forces at the service of the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, which is the Roman Catholic Church . We accept his teachings with mood subsidiary. We believe firmly in the Primacy of Peter and its prerogatives, and this makes us suffer so much the current situation. "

His Holiness Benedict XVI, who has followed the process from the beginning, has always tried to reconstruct the fracture to the fraternity, also met Archbishop personally Bernard Fellay, August 29 2005. On that occasion, His Holiness has expressed a willingness to proceed by degrees and in reasonable time and in that way now, benignly, with pastoral care and paternal mercy, by decree of the Congregation for Bishops, 21 January 2009, calls the excommunication that weighed on prelates mentioned. The Holy Father has been inspired in this decision dall’auspicio that there will soon complete the reconciliation and full communion.

So, were the excommunications of the four Bishops soley removed, or was it lifted from all involved, including the Archbishop?

No, Archbishop Lefebvre remains excommunicated. Only the four surviving bishops. The Holy Father is proceeding very slowly on this. We’re unsure what the end will look like.
