I missed a flight a couple of weeks ago. It was largely my fault (I wasn’t early), but there was also a long line at the security checkpoint. I was transferred to another flight, which ended up overbooked, so that the airline paid a volunteer $400 worth of future tickets as well as a hotel room and meals to fly out the next day. It is my belief that I am obligated to make an effort to repay the airline. Would anyone agree?

wait, they overbooked, you got bumped and in only partial recompense for your inconvenience they gave you some coupons you may or may not be able to use, and you are wondering if you owe them something? what am I missing?

You’re not obliged morally or otherwise to be early for a flight, and most certainly you were in perfectly good time for it, otherwise you would have been told ‘tough cheddar the flight’s already closed, you’re on your own’ - happened to me once, so trust me they’re not scared to say it!

And if any flight is overbooked that is entirely down to the way airlines plan - they do often overbook, entirely intentionally, and cater well in their budgets for the costs when they occasionally need to compensate people.

No, you do not owe the airline anything.

Nope…God Bless 🙂

Unless you intended to cost them money or were careless in your action you did not cause the “compensation” and thus do not owe. This is really a form of business risk. As one who has been left behind ( or in the cold) by practically every airline and 90% at their fault trust me I know this business risk well. Yet as I travel for 1/2 of what others charge their company and I continue to accept the risk for the overall savings. I am happy you were treated well, please be patient when the situation is reverse.
