Report: 150 Catholic Colleges Have Ties to Planned Parenthood

A Catholic educational watchdog group released a new report today detailing the connections more than 150 Catholic colleges and universities have with the Planned Parenthood abortion business.

The report, titled “A Scandalous Relationship: Catholic Colleges and Planned Parenthood,’ shows the current and past connections of Catholic colleges and universities to Planned Parenthood as documented on the Internet. In the report, the Cardinal Newman Society urges Catholic colleges and universities to “embrace a no-tolerance position for any relationship with Planned Parenthood,” which CNS asserts is “a leading contributor to what Pope John Paul II labeled a ‘ulture of death’.”

I hate when articles like this pop up because you can always be assured that they are going to take things way to far in order to have a more sensational number.

The word ties is so vague and loaded that it essentially means nothing to anyone who cares about credible news. Sure some of the information in the report is of valid concern but things like this

Consultant for Planned Parenthood Midwest Region.

Are not valid complaints at all. Catholic Universities should not be criticized for hiring someone who had past relations with Planned Parenthood, especially not as a consultant who easily could have been given them advice in any number of things unrelated to abortion. If she were currently working with the organization it might be an issue, but having been a consultant in the past doesn’t mean anything.

This is really bad because Planned Parenthood supports artificial birth control and it is one of the largest supporters of abortions in the USA. I don;t see why Catholic colleges are giving their support to Planned Parenthood?

Wow, that is so disgusting. How could a college or university which claims to be Catholic ever hold such ties??? Personally, I think that all colleges or universities which claim to be Catholic should have their Catholic name removed and be forbidden from calling themselves Catholic so long as they retain ties to evil organizations such as Planned Parenthood.

We need to keep in mind that the “ties” are rather loose. For some it appears to be nothing more than the alumni newsletter mentions graduates who work for Planned Parenthood. Obviously better editing is needed, but that’s hardly a “tie.”

I read this article at Catholic Culture last night and this morning decided to email each of those universities listed who have documents on their website supporting planned parenthood and question them about it.

I encourage you to do the same when you get time. This is scandalous!

Beware of any College or University that calls itself “Catholic” - if it does not use the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” as a Student Text as part of its core cirriculum for first or second year students.

Patrick, I pray that you will examine why you are so quick to criticize the faithful who oppose abortion. I swear I am not stalking you, I just bumped into your comment randomly. Loyola, Chicago is noted many times in the report with clearly troubling ties (including a breathtaking homage to PP from a university document near the bottom of page 3). So, that citation you point out didn’t pad the number of colleges.

The authors of the report clearly didn’t need to pad or exaggerate, based on the wealth of obviously strong examples of ties. So maybe there’s something that the Cardinal Newman Society understand more deeply than you and I about how colleges work, what online CVs are meant to convey, what effect that an expressed association with PP by their scholars may have on students, or what should be expected of a college that enjoys the status of Catholic that explain why the more subtle examples were included.

A couple of perceived weak points in an overall strong and shocking report from an organization like the Cardinal Newman Society, and you just hate it when this happens. Please prayerfully ask yourself why. Do we really need to start taking the Cardinal Newman Society with a grain of salt? Any time PP’s Catholic friends in Congress or ties to Catholic institutions are brought up for scrutiny, do we really need to nitpick? What’s the point? Forgive a bit of zeal for fighting the greatest evil in the world, how about?

“Pregnancy and Parent Resources” including the Santa Monica Center of Planned Parenthood and the Los Angeles Center of Planned Parenthood, noting that they provide “pregnancy options education,” “information on pregnancy planning” and “birth control.” Also recommended is Catholics for Choice, which “helps Catholic women to make thoughtful decisions through respected publications that address Catholic doctrine and the moral and ethical issues involved in reproductive health decisions.” The list recommends the Pregnancy Options website, which asks “Is this the right time for me to bring a new life into the world through my body?” and “Abortion: Which method is right for me?” The list also recommends sites for “family planning” help.

I don;t know why Catholic schools and colleges are recommending that their students use the abortion facilities of Planned Parenthood?

Well first don’t worry about seemingly stalking me because I really don’t take much notice of who posts in any particular topic. It is an open forum and if you post in every single topic I do it won’t bother me a bit.

As to why I criticize it is because I believe in responsible research and journalism. I was trained to do these things during my education, and any company I work for expects real and substantial information. I simply seek to hold Catholic institutions to the same standards that the academic world holds itself to. Yes Loyola appears multiple times and many of the issues are worth of concern, but there isn’t any need to pad the number of claims against them. Pointing out that a particular employee worked as a consultant for planned parent hood over 20 years ago not only doesn’t represent a substantial tie, but labels the named woman as being in support of something she may very well detest. In fact if you look at the womans resume most of her work is in early family development and helping poor families and single mothers provide a good environment for their children. The tie simply wasn’t needed, and subsequently weakens all the other ties around it by allowing for an opening in which a reader can believe that the issue is less serious.

If we found an article from pro-choice individuals and they cherry picked information to support their side we would and should be upset about. Likewise I believe that we should hold ourselves, at the very least, to the same standard but personally would prefer to hold Catholics to a much higher standard. It wouldn’t even be difficult to make that report better, any half decent intern could quickly go through and delete all that minor or questionable claims and there would still be a wealth of important information.
