My husband and I enjoy American Idol
When I was little, I remember watching Ted Mack’s Amateur Hour. American Idol is just another manifestation of this fun show.
We have really loved many of the singers who have come to public notice through American Idol. My personal favorite is Taylor Hicks–we’ve actually traveled to see him several times–love his music, his style, his life.
My husband’s favorite was Constantine, who has done well on Broadway.
We also like Scotty Mcreery from good ol’ Garner, North Carolina! Beautiful country voice, and I love his song, 5 More Minutes.
And Jennifer Hudson, who didn’t win (Simon didn’t think she was good!). She’s wonderful.
Many others! Adam Lambert was and still is a favorite.
We currently love Laine Hardy. What a great life story and family! And we love his singing and his style. Hope he wins!
I see nothing to mock in a “talent show.” I sometimes think people jump on the “I hate AI bandwagon” just because everyone else is dissing the show. Many of these people haven’t watched the show in years, and some have actually never watched the show at all, but they still feel the need to make fun of it.
As a musician myself (piano, organ), I think It’s wonderful to see an alternative way for talented people to come to public notice!!! There are so many talented people who try to do the traditional route–gigs in local bars and restaurants, churches, schools, camps, business conferences, retreats, etc., and never, ever make it out of their own town because they just can’t catch that lucky break, and they can’t move to one of the music “meccas” (Nashville, NYC, LA, etc.) to try to break into the business because of family and work obligations., and they don’t know anyone “in the business,” and they have issues that make it hard for them to “network” e.g., Susan Boyle, from Scotland, who had some mental health issues and a low income and lived with her parents for most of her life, but has the voice of an angel, at least, IMO. If it hadn’t been for Simon’s talent show in England, she would never been heard by anyone except her pets and a few people in her parish in her small town.
Just because someone does well on AI does not guarantee them a great career and millions of dollars. Most of the Idol winners and finalists are not making a lot of money for various reasons. The show offers a good lesson to kids who want to be rich and famous singers–they have to keep working, working, WORKING to be successful in this difficult profession.
And there are some beautiful stories on AI that I love hearing. Kelly Pickler’s story is especially inspiring.
Please check out Laine Hardy on the show!
