Glad to say I never watched that show even back in the day when I used to watch television.

No big loss. Some of the old ones were good when it was on the other tv network. The newer format with new judges on ABC is just not good at all. Plus, it seems like some of the votes in recent years have gone to the person with the saddest story instead of the most talent.

American Idol has not been canceled.
Just read that American Idol has been renewed for a “third” season. I’ve also been reading headlines about whether or not R.c yang Seacrest would be returning next season.

I don’t understand this comment.

There are many things that I have never done. E.g., I have never owned an I-phone (or any kind of “flat” phone that has “apps”). I have a flip phone, and I’m happy with it.

But I don’t feel “glad” that I’ve never owned an I-phone. I may own one some day if I have a use for it. I have thought about it because my cute little flip phone camera takes awful photos, and I would like to be able to have a portable gallery of photos of people and places dear to me.

I don’t condemn others who own an I-phone, although I do really miss talking to people. It seems that many people who own I-phones spend all their off-work time scrolling through all their apps. But not everyone. And often, people like my daughters who own I-phones are able to do some wonderful things–look up times that places are open and closed, book tickets, make reservations, look up directions, look up the name of some person that no one can remember their name! etc.

There are a lot of television shows that I have never watched and probably never will, but I don’t feel any gladness over this. It has to do with my time limitations. If I were laid up/paralyzed/homebound–I would probably consider watching a lot of these shows, although many just don’t interest me.

As for giving up television, that’s fine. I happen to like television. I think it’s a wonderful way to relax and enjoy spending time with my husband, especially in the cold Midwestern winters when it’s just plain dangerous to go out anywhere unless necessary.

And yes, I still like American Idol for the reasons that I posted earlier. And I’m thrilled that my favorite three singers made the Top Three last night. I didn’t actually watch it–my husband and I will probably TiVo through that show to hear what our favorite singer did.

I see no reason to cast aspersions upon a show like American Idol. It’s fun and inspiring watching young musicians trying to make a career out of their music. I think it’s interesting. I respect that others have no interest in it. I hope that they will respect me and other TV fans.

Honestly, I fail to see where in my post have I cast aspersions or disrespect on you.

I never liked singing and talent shows, I’ve never liked romantic comedies but that is just a statement of my preferences. It was never was meant to disparage those who don’t share my taste.

Different strokes for different folks that’s all.

As much as I loathe this show, it is still better than “Real Housewives of Couldcarelesville.” 98% of these so called reality TV shows are just plain awful on so many levels.

I don’t think of it as the same, but I did watch the house flip shows, Cops, and a few things like that. By and large, I don’t have much use for TV shows in general. I like to watch English murder mysteries, and that is about it.

I have every season, and… the same for Foils War! I wasn’t quite as excited about Mrs. Fisher. I have seen a few Fr. Brown, and so far so good. I gave up on Rosemary and Thyme pretty quickly.

they have issues that make it hard for them to “network” e.g., Susan Boyle, from Scotland, who had some mental health issues and a low income and lived with her parents for most of her life, but has the voice of an angel, at least, IMO. If it hadn’t been for Simon’s talent show in England, she would never been heard by anyone except her pets and a few people in her parish in her small town.
Susan Boyle singing “I Dreamed A Dream” is the ultimate “feel-good” video. I dare anyone to watch it without smiling broadly:

Yes, the show re-booted last year, with new judges and a slightly different approach that does not show the “non-singer” auditions, and does not have a “Simon” making sarcastic comments to vulnerable people (which, BTW, is not necessarily a bad thing, because many people “in the business” will say and do much worse to a hopeful musician).
I always took Simon as a deliberate caricature of a snarky, overly self-confident Englishman. I think his sarcasm was just there for entertainment value. In the end, he treated Susan like a princess, and IIRC he provided for some of her temporal needs and helped her get her career started. I don’t think badly of Simon at all.
