An AP story, carried by the International Herald Tribune:

A senior official in China’s state-sanctioned Catholic Church said in comments published Tuesday that he would like Pope Benedict XVI to visit China and celebrate Mass.

Benedict did not dismiss the possibility but said the issue was “complicated.”

Of course, it’s complicated. The Beijing government has set up the Catholic Patriotic Association ( ) in opposition to the Vatican. Is it any wonder that the late Pope John Paul II was never seen visiting Mainland China?
