Sick indeed. I am sure Pope Francis is hugely disappointed. Much like St. John Paul II must have been with Fr Marcial Maciel.

Pure manipulation on the part of Mr. Vanier and his guru.

I am hugely disappointed.

Yes @Genesis315 it sounds like there’s a playbook that they all use to manipulate their vulnerable victims.

I won’t go so far as to say that the gates of Hades have prevailed against the Church but the Evil One certainly has his foot well in the door.

Jean Vanier was not a priest as I understand. Not to minimize what happened, but what makes what Jean Vanier so did unusual and so surprising? Was he married? Did he use his position to coerce woman into these relationships?
If he was providing spiritual direction to these women he absolutely abused his role.

After having read part of the the article posted by above…the final report article by L’arche, I agree that what is described here is completely messed up. I hadn’t read or even known about the details of this investigation. I agree that what is described is a total abuse.

Here’s the summary report: https://www.larche.org/documents/10...2-EN.pdf/6f25e92c-35fe-44e8-a80b-dd79ede4746b What he and his associated priest are alleged to have said to these women is sick and blasphemous and sounds like pretty much what all these abusers say. It’s really like they had a script they passed around.

I’m not going to post links, but it appears this Fr. Thomas Philippe had a brother who was also a priest (and died some years ago) and is now accused of sexually abusing nuns for whom he was the spiritual advisor.
Really rather a mess all around.

I can only say that I am completely shocked. All my life, Jean Vanier has been one of my greatest heroes. Ever since I was first aware of L’Arche and Dr. Vanier’s work with people with intellectual disabilities, I felt he was one of the clearest examples of how Jesus taught that we should live. I was always so deeply impressed by his profound respect for the inherent dignity of every person. This news is just appalling. It is something I would not have believed was possible.
