God rest his soul.
As a pastor in Anaheim, Father Kuzma was a most warm and gracious human being. This “Latin” treasures encounters with him.

He’s a Ukrainian GCC bishop, for Slovaks in Canada. There are no Ruthenian Bishops in Canada. Only the 4 in the US and 2 in Europe.
Ruthenian Recension faithful who chose to be called Slovaks of the Byzantine Rite.

Fr. Dn. Diak,

I attended the second part of the Priestly Parastas for Bishop George on Monday night. I was disappointed in the low numbers of laity and priests, but was glad to see Met. Nicholas and some of his priests make the trip from Johnstown. The funeral liturgy was even more disappointing.
I’ve heard that it was only in the Pittsburgh area papers this past weekend but has been in the Uniontown paper everyday since his falling asleep.

I’m just SHOCKED that they didn’t bury him for well over a week!

Can someone please tell what could be that important that MB postponed the funeral until yesterday? It’s not like MB went to Uzhorod for Vl. Ivan’s funeral or anything like that… he wasn’t in Rome…

Enquiring minds would like to know…

I think it was to wait for family and clergy from Van Nuys Eparchy to travel to Pittsburgh.

In answer to pachunky: Bishop Georges’ family could have been in attendance overnite and would have been if the schedule worked out that way. The attendance was poor, yes, and church representation could have been better, but with the passing of such a fine man of God, I dont think your sarcasm is called for either.

The shame is that such a fine man’s funeral was held up for 10 days because someone else had “other matters too important” to celebrate his funeral…

It sounds like you might know what those “other important matters” might be. If you do, I sure would like to know what they were.

Why was Bp. George not buried in the Eparchy in which he was a bishop, Van Nuys? Is this tradition limited to the Latin Rite?

He was buried closer to family, IIRC. That, and near where he died; his infirmity was not spent in the eparchy he was emeritus of.

Vl.Kuzma was buried on the grounds of Mt.St. Macrina Monastery of the Sisters of St. Basil the Great in Uniontown,PA, along side the Bishops and Metropolitans of the Byzantine Ruthenian church in America. He had been residing in the nursing home there for the last few years. He did get to attend this year’s Otpust.
