Mark,
I like your sig line, but if you put another hyphen in, it will be easier for us to know that it’s not “the good Pope Leo…” which rather startled me. But I had only had a small amount of my morning caffeine.

Nothing emboldens the wicked so greatly as the lack of courage on the part of the good-Pope Leo XIII

Top 5 possibilities for the RNC’s mystery speaker
On Thursday night, the Republican convention schedule
has a mystery hole just before Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Mitt Romney’s speeches. The space is scheduled for “remarks” but simply lists “To be Announced” where the name of the speaker should be.

The Wall Street Journal speculated, and The Drudge Report highlighted, that the mysterious speaker could be former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

But that’s almost entirely implausible. Palin is popular with some conservatives, but toxic to the nation at large. There is no way she would be the mystery speaker in a prime time slot. Plus, she is vocally siding against Team Romney on Republican convention rules changes. That’s not something a special mystery speaker for Romney would do.

But since people are speculating who this mystery speaker could be, here are the top 5 possibilities:

1.) Joe Lieberman

A high profile Democrat endorsing Romney on national television would obviously be seen as a boon for the Romney campaign. Yes, Lieberman is officially an “independent Democrat” in the Senate now and, yes, he endorsed Arizona Sen. John McCain’s presidential candidacy at the convention in 2008. But getting Lieberman to speak would still be a pretty big coup for Romney. Lieberman was, after all, a Democratic vice presidential nominee just over a decade ago.

Lieberman has yet to endorse anyone this cycle and said in April that he wasn’t planning on endorsing President Obama or the Republican nominee. But like the speaker he would precede, Marco Rubio, Lieberman has been a critic of President Obama’s foreign policy. He is also seen as a possible cabinet member in a Republican administration, especially since he is leaving the Senate. It seems quite possible that if there is indeed a mystery speaker, it could be Joe.

2.) Colin Powell

Sure, a lot of conservatives aren’t big fans of Colin Powell, but that’s not the point of the convention. Romney excited the base by picking Paul Ryan, now he needs to reach out to the undecided independents who will decide the election. And retired Gen. Powell, who switched party lines to endorse Barack Obama in 2008, remains popular nationally. People see him, fairly or unfairly, as an honest broker. If he were to reverse course and drop his support for Obama and endorse Romney in a prime time mystery convention speech Thursday, that would be a major get for Romney.

3.) Nancy Reagan

Nancy endorsed Romney’s presidential bid at the end of May, but it would be high drama for the 91-year-old widow of the most revered conservative leader of the 20th century to come on stage and give Romney her husband’s imprimatur in a prime time address. Reagan was loved by independents as well, and spinning the narrative that that this election is like that of 1980 when Reagan came to the rescue to save the economy from Jimmy Carter seems like something Team Romney would relish.

4.) Clint Eastwood

The 82-year old actor known for his toughness and grit has already endorsed Romney. While many Hollywood actors are prone to scorn for being out of touch elitists, Eastwood doesn’t carry that image. He isn’t the Hollywood-type most Americans would recoil from for injecting himself into politics. An endorsement from Eastwood, who served as mayor of a California city and who George H.W. Bush reportedly considered for his vice presidential nominee, would seem to fit the bill as someone who would work as a high-profile mystery prime time speaker.

5.) Tim Tebow

Okay, this is by far the least likely of the five. You might call it a Hail Mary. But immediately before the mystery speaker, the convention will feature Olympians lending their support to Romney. What if immediately after, another great athlete with national appeal strode on stage to endorse Romney? Tebow-mania is electric and the son of missionaries would seem to fit in well in the Republican Party. Probably won’t happen, but it is more likely than Sarah Palin being the mystery speaker.

This, of course, is all speculation. Perhaps there won’t even be a big-name mystery speaker. But if there is as the schedule suggests their might be, these are five names that immediately come to mind as making sense for what Romney is trying to accomplish with the convention.

That is offensive. 38% of Hispanics voted republican in the 2010 elections, that is not a small number. That number has increased from 29% in 2008 and 30% in 2006

Black vote shifted republican in 2010

How long will democrats perpetuate the myth that the republican party is not diverse?
HuffPo reprinted a Reuters article on Mrs. Love:
Mia Love, Black, Mormon, Woman, Republican Running For Congress In Utah, Prepares For RNC Speech

Rock star. Novelty. Myth-buster. Surprise.

That’s how some pundits describe Mia Love, a Republican congressional nominee in Utah who is upending stereotypes about the state and its predominant faith. A rising star and mayor of a small Utah city, she will have a brief prime-time speaking role on Tuesday at the Republican convention.

Love, 36, is a black Mormon in a deeply conservative state where her race makes up less than 3 percent of the population. If she bests the popular, right-of-center Democratic incumbent, Jim Matheson, in November, Love would be the first black, conservative woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, although polls show she faces an uphill battle.
It is utterly pitiful the racism of the left…Race has to be the centerpiece of everything. If you are of _____ race, you cannot make it on your own, you MUST have government assistance…therefore, you MUST be a member of Party “A”. (This is reflected in the stylebook editing of the article itself…)

Disgusting.

Anyway, you should read some of the comments on the article. Most are inappropriate for CAF (yes, you’re welcome, Robert). One of the milder ones was:
I called Allen West a bigot and it goes through. I tell the truth about Mia Love, how she’s Haitian-American and not African-American and how her parents arrived in the country AFTER Jim Crow and the Civil Rights movement which would explain WHY she’s a Republican, and a Mormon, all things that could be possible and the moderators block it… Interesting. I guess it’s easier to keep letting people believe she some turn coat African-American who’s parents struggled through segregation and she’s simply turning her back on her “people”

From BuzzFeed:

A shouting match erupted on the floor of the Republican National Convention on Tuesday afternoon as Chairman Reince Priebus called for a vote to unseat several Ron Paul delegates.

Loud cries of “Boo” and” Seat them now” filled the convention floor as repeated calls to contest a credentials committee report fell on deaf ears after it passed by a voice vote. A majority of the delegates from six states were required to call for a roll call vote on the credentials report, submitting their intent to do so in writing in advance. Despite Maine the delegates’ claims, no such support came from their colleagues from other states.

The boos disrupted the speech of Puerto Rico National Committeewoman Zori Fonalledas, who was set to announce the nomination of Speaker of the House John Boehner as permanent convention chairman.
Not a Ron Paul fan so much myself, but he won delegates fair and square…they should have been properly seated.

No to Palin.

I hope it’s not Joe Liberal-man. I think he’s a poor speaker and he’s not that relevant politically. So what, he’s a Democrat who breaks with the party line once in a while. 🤷

Nancy Reagan? Not able to pull it off now, she’s much too frail.

Tebow? Nah. Not for this job.

Collin Powell - Meh. Again, pull the black guy out and parade him in front of the cameras when necessary.

Eastwood is just an old man now.

I don’t think it will be any of these.

Well that would mean 62% of Hispanics voted democrat in 2010. Which is not a small number either. The Black vote shifted from what percentage? I didn’t get a number.

Were not pursuing minority affairs in the Republican party.

But if Republicans aren’t worried about the minority vote. Why did the Ohio republicans attempt to change early voting hours in more African-American counties, and increase them in more white or conservative counties?

2012 election is the first time ever all Ohio voters will get an absentee ball request form sent to them so early voting is not as needed as it may have been before. How do the voting hours change disenfranchise anybody from voting? If republicans wanted to disenfranchise the Black vote why have this new rule of sending an absentee ballot to every voter. Republicans are trying to rein in the costs of early voting for local boards of elections.

Voting made easier has not increased voter turn out in Ohio

Where is a link saying they are increasing voting hours in conservative, white counties?

MSNBC, network that did not air a single speech from any minority republican at the RNC

Typical MSNBC making this about race
I honestly don’t think theyre making it about race. I think the Republicans who are pointing fingers at MSNBC are making it about race. 😉
How do the voting hours change disenfranchise anybody from voting?
…I don’t…are you serious?

It will give the conservative counties more time to vote. So more conservatives will get votes in. While it takes voting hours away from Liberal counties giving them less time to vote so less Liberal will get to vote.

If i didn’t matter than the Ohio Republicans wouldn’t of felt the need to change it. Even my Republican Friends admitted this was an attempt to help Romney’s way to Presidency. You can’t justify this.

When no minority republican is shown speaking there is a problem at that network

Which conservative counties get more time?

Ohio republicans changed the rule to save costs for local board of elections

I thank him for his service to our country and pray that he enjoys a long retirement.
Who said anything about retiring? After he leaves Congress, he can work on his Campaign for Liberty full time. You thought his supporters were a pain in the neck before. Wait until “crazy uncle Ron” is around to rouse them on full time without the distraction of Washington.

I’m not being cynical, I’m just not being overly-optimistic. Cynical means the GOP has no hope, I’m not saying that…I’m just saying “they don’t get it” and they are doing the same stuff that hurts them.

As for David Souter, forget him what about CJ Roberts? He was supposedly another Thomas or Scalia and Roberts decided to uphold an un-Constitutional law on the most shakiest of legal grounds. As for holding the GOP accountable, my “negativity” derives from the recent RNC decision to shut-out Conservatives, which hurts our ability to “hold the GOP accountable”

Once again I’m not being cynical, I’m just being pragmatic.
One man’s cynic is another man’s realist.

He could always renew “The Ron Paul Report”, or just have a permanent position over at Prison Planet.

I didn’t know that you watched MSNBC? Tell me how many times a day do you watch it?
Every Ohio voter will get an absentee ballot form sent to them so how is anybody not able to vote?
You’re missing the point if it doesn’t matter why did the Republicans change this for Liberal counties?

Ohio republicans changed the rule to save costs for local board of elections
And it was just a coincidence they did it in Liberal counties right?
And increased it in Conservative counties. You can’t justify it.

Ha
I really don’t think Democrats are concerned about the tens of minorities who associate themselves to the Republican party.
No doubt the Democrats will ignore and take for granted the mindless loyalty of the minorities that give it undying devotion…in spite of the evidence that the DNC does nothing to help them.

He could always renew “The Ron Paul Report”, or just have a permanent position over at Prison Planet.
Unfortunately for the GOP and the DNC, Ron Paul is tremendously popular among the college crowd…you know, the future members of either party. If he cannot change the parties by direct involvement, he is going to change them by educating the people who are the future politicians, delegates, and party officers.

I was a “free drugs” kind of conservative leaning libertarian in college, too.

People change.

From Red Alert Politics:
MSNBC cuts every speech made by a minority from RNC speech coverage

MSNBC wants you to think the Republican Party hates minorities. So much so that the liberal news network cut minority speeches from it’s convention coverage.

When popular Tea Party candidate Ted Cruz, the GOP nominee for Senate, took the stage, MSNBC cut away from the Republican National Convention and the Hispanic Republican from Texas’ speech.

MSNBC stayed on commercial through former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis’ speech, as well. Davis, who recently became a Republican, is black.
I’m sure it was strictly coincidental. 🤷
The Democrats are so obvious, its actually kinda silly to watch them if you understand reflective politics. Simply, you point at your opponent and scream loudly, accusing him of the very thing you know you are.

Racist

War on Women

Misogynist

That sorta stuff.

I mean, the guy that they are going to have talk about how much the DNC respects women is Bill Clinton. I don’t even know what to say about that. It is as ridiculous as having Khaddafi be the head of the UN Human Rights Council.

So you are saying that the only reason why the hundreds of thousands of college students like Ron Paul and his ideas is because they want to legally smoke weed? Wow, nice condescending attitude. Even if that is the case, no other politician in the arena is getting this demographic actually involved in politics. None, not even Obama has the traction he does. Obama can get them weeweed up for a month or so, but these kids are actually getting involved in the process. Maybe they will be willing to take on the establishment and get marijuana decriminalized…then maybe they will stay involved and take on bigger issues, like entitlements, deficit spending, the profligate military industrial complex.
