I don’t understand why the media is trying to turn this tax thing into some huge scandal. It’s not like Romney is dodging taxes or something. If people think Romney should be paying more in taxes, why don’t they ask the guy in the White House why Romney’s tax rate isn’t higher?

John Kerry’s tax rate was in the 13% range, and the tight wad moved his multimillion dollar boat to a different state to keep from paying MA sales and property taxes.

I just had to say that you have the best. signature. EVER!!! I love Chronotrigger.

Romney had a pro life conversion, his past position on abortion is irrelevant.
That’s what Rick Santorum said on CNN after tonight’s debate. Santorum said his problem with Romney is not that he made one flip flop on abortion because afterall people can change postions. But Santorum said his concern was the combined flip flops Romney has made. Whatever he meant by that.

“Newt … while he performed well, he failed to outshine his competitors. Mitt Romney, in particular, was just as effective as Gingrich, at times more so, as when he accepted responsibility for being successful. My guess is that Romney won the South Carolina primary tonight.” - Powerline

David Brooks: Money didn’t make Mitt Romney. A legacy of persistence and dogged determination did.

“Is Romney a spoiled, cosseted character? Has he been corrupted by ease and luxury? The notion is preposterous. All his life, Romney has been a worker and a grinder. He earned two degrees at Harvard simultaneously (in law and business). He built a business. He’s persevered year after year, amid defeat after defeat, to build a political career. Romney’s salient quality is not wealth. It is, for better and worse, his tenacious drive — the sort of relentlessness that we associate with striving immigrants, not rich scions.” - David Brooks for the New York Times

Interesting comments by David Brooks. I can imagine the narrative from the Obama campaign if Romney gets the nomination: it will be class warfare, envy, etc. Romney will be portrayed as part of the greedy rich. But when I see Romney up there on the podium debating, I can imagine him debating Obama and doing quite well. The whole campaign he has tried to make the issue one of defeating Obama and highlighting Obama’s failures. Now Obama has vetoed the oil pipeline which represents a huge opportunity for the GOP. If Obamacare is ruled unconstitutional that would be another opportunity… its not over yet, folks.

Mitt Romney is “Consistently” Pro-Life, Mass Activist Says

The head of the statewide pro-life group in Massachusetts has released a new statement following Thursday night’s Republican debate saying Mitt Romney is “consistently” pro-life.

Massachusetts Citizens for Life President Anne Fox made the following statement on what she said are false attacks on Romney’s record:

“Since being elected governor, Mitt Romney has had a consistent commitment to the culture of life. As governor, he worked closely with Massachusetts Citizens for Life. Misguided attempts to blame Mitt Romney for the fact that state-funded health care in Massachusetts funds abortion ignore the facts. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled in 1981 that the Massachusetts Constitution requires the funding of abortion. This decision forces Massachusetts to fund abortion to the same extent it funds other medical procedures. A 1986 attempt to overturn the court ruling with a Constitutional Amendment failed. Obviously, in providing health coverage, the governor and the legislature were bound by this decision.”

Fox’s comments mirror those from David French, Senior Counsel at American Center for Law and Justice and former attorney with the Alliance Defense Fund:

Let’s make one thing perfectly clear, any abortion coverage contained in Massachusetts insurance plans is required by Massachusetts legal precedent that Mitt could not alter. The Weekly Standard raised this issue in a recent piece by John McCormack:
*

Some social conservatives don’t buy Romney’s defense that it’s all the fault of the judges. “You know what I would think if I were a pro-lifer? That’s a pretty darn good reason not to have the government take over the health care system,” says Steve Deace, a Christian conservative Iowa radio host and longtime Romney antagonist. “Forget the mandate, which is wrong to begin with. The first moral principle is don’t murder.”
Code:
Why would Romney expand access to government-subsidized health care if those plans would cover elective abortions? David French of Evangelicals for Mitt says that argument is a “classic example of not understanding what an actual governor of an actual blue state has to face.”

French argues that by going to the Heritage Foundation for advice and using what leverage he had, Romney got the best deal he could in Massachusetts. “Doing nothing wasn’t a realistic alternative,” he says. “People need to get over the idea that he’s coming out of Texas. He’s coming out of Massachusetts.”

“Mitt Romney did not have the option of saying .  .  . that there won’t be government involvement in Massachusetts health care,” says French. “He was a conservative governor facing a veto-proof [Democratic] supermajority in both houses dead-set on a particular kind of health care reform.”*
Regarding Planned Parenthood’s presence on a state panel, yes they apparently have a reserved slot (along with 13 other representatives) on something called the MassHealth Payment Policy Advisory Board (not on the “planning board for the health care plan” as some have claimed). This Board has no authority over abortion policy and in fact has no real power except to compile reports and make recommendations).

Pro-life people of all stripes will continue to debate whether Romney is sufficiently pro-life. What is for certain is that he is campaigning as a pro-life advocate and he would be significantly better than Obama, who is massively pro-abortion.

I don’t think the class warfare rhetoric from Obama is going to work; Americans are fed up of being divided. The irony of the Obama in 2008 saying he was basically going to be post partisan and now pandering to his base, more partisan than ever.

Christians believe that God became man. Romney believes that men become gods. This puts him further ‘beyond the pale’ than an atheist in my view and I hope that no Christian supports him in any way.

I’m not considering voting for him for Pope or for bishop, but rather for POTUS and would base my vote on his qualifications for that office, not on the tenets of his religious faith. I dare say that many Americans would not buy into our Catholic beliefs either.

So would you vote for a Satanist with a nice smile and a way with money?

If he were the best candidate for POTUS, meaning that he had survived the primaries and the debates to come out on top,and had the support of his party, and had a program that I approved of, then yes, I would.

This thread is for discussion of Mitt Romney. It’s not just people posting about how much they like him. 😛

It appears the Mod has done this for all the GOP candidates (there’s a Santorum thread, a Paul thread, a Gingrich thread…). I’m thinking this is for ease of discussion so that we’re not posting the same things over and over again in thread after thread everytime a new news article comes out (which is constantly).

I don’t understand why the media is trying to turn this tax thing into some huge scandal. It’s not like Romney is dodging taxes or something. If people think Romney should be paying more in taxes, why don’t they ask the guy in the White House why Romney’s tax rate isn’t higher?
Because we live in a time when people are beginning to question the greater gap of inequality today in our country between the 1% and the rest of us, questioning the growing gap between the richest and the middle class and the poor. And a greater degree of fairness is on the minds of many Americans even if not so here on this forum. Romney’s tax rate could be higher if the Republicans would simply go along with raising tax rates on him and others at his income level. But Obama couldn’t even get them to agree to end the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest and go back to the Clinton rates.

What some people don’t get is everyone knows Mitt is wealthy. That’s not the issue. The Kennedys and all sorts of officeholders on both sides of the aisle have been.

The question in today’s environment and economic times with so many still suffering while the rich get richer, is not a matter of his wealth or envy of it. But rather is about fairness.

In addition you can be rich and still “get” the rest of America. But when someone says as Romney said that making over $300,000 in speaking fees was not a lot of money, people question in these economic times whether he “gets” it.

Bottom line the Romney tax issue brings to the forefront and illustrates an issue on the minds of many Amercians today.
