He may be preordained by the media and the Republican establishment, but he’s actually campaigning on VERY LITTLE. His message is very very weak. He’s a businessman, he knows the most about the economy… Is that really it? Anyways, Newt’s message and Santorum’s message are both WAY better than his. And, furthermore their economic policies are far more conservative.I have a problem with Mormonism too but what are our options? He’s the establishment candidate and was pre-ordained. I probably won’t want to vote for him even against Obama. He can’t beat him.
I’m glad to see that you are praying CMatt. That really gladdens my heart. On this, my highly likely to be last post on this forum.
I’m confused. Are you giving up before the general election even gets started, or do you support Obama? I can’t keep my Democrat and Republican posters straight. He’s the favorite conservative candidate of the media. At least that’s my subjective impression of the matter. He has the connections and the money. No, Obama is. If it makes you feel better, put up Romney signs in front of your house and vote for him. It won’t matter, he can’t beat Obama. Nobody really likes him.
Believe it or not, not everyone who doesn’t share your views was bullied or bribed into holding them. Some people sincerely, honestly believe things you don’t, an support politicians you don’t. I have a conservative father and a liberal mother, so I had to learn that early.I
Obama is going to be tough to beat. If folks don’t have the stomach to stand up to him, then we will skip further and further away.
I agree. If I led anyone to think that, then I mis-posted. Did I say that people were bullied or bribed?Believe it or not, not everyone who doesn’t share your views was bullied or bribed into holding them. No I don’t think you did, but it’s not that people don’t have the stomach to stand up against Obama. It’s having the stomach to vote for McRomney is what’s getting them.I agree. If I led anyone to think that, then I mis-posted. Did I say that people were bullied or bribed?
Well, rereading your post, if by “standing up to Obama,” you were referring exclusively to Republican(-ish) voters, then I suppose it might make sense. But I read it to mean everyone. I personally would just as soon want someone to stand up to Gingrich. Romney I could take or leave.I agree. If I led anyone to think that, then I mis-posted. Did I say that people were bullied or bribed?
The fact we must explain why we believe that abortion, gay marriage and contraception are bad for society to nearly everyone makes me think we’ve already lost. But that’s another issue.Obama is going to be tough to beat. If folks don’t have the stomach to stand up to him, then we will slip further and further away.
Well, that would be a “duh” moment, Raskolnikov.Well, rereading your post, if by “standing up to Obama,” you were referring exclusively to Republican(-ish) voters, then I suppose it might make sense. No surprises expected there. Romney will win both without much of a fuss.Nonetheless, we’ll see what Nevada and Maine caucuses bring for the candidates.
Praying for Obama? Are you happy with what Obama is forcing upon our Catholic hospitals - forcing them to provide for sterilizations, abortions, etc. ?
Well, I’m sorry to say that Ron Paul only received 7% of the vote today, and I do mean that. He needs a good showing to get a speaking spot at the convention. It’s not going to happen with those kind of numbers. I think he took 2nd to Romney in Nevada in 2008, so let’s hope he can have a mini-surge…No I don’t think you did, but it’s not that people don’t have the stomach to stand up against Obama. Okay. That’s funny…I don’t care who you are…I hope Newt and Mitt destroy each other, leaving the way open for Paul or failing that, Santorum.
Not a pipedream at all. You claim to have viewed the article I posted regarding national polls pitting Ron Paul against Obama, in which, right now, he is only a few points behind. If the Republican Party threw their financial weight behind Paul, he would stand a very strong chance.Really? Which poll suggests that? The polls I see show Romney as the strongest candidate in a match up with Obama - some show Romney in the lead [by] a few points, in a dead heat, or slightly behind. I deal with reality, not pipedreams.
Here’s the problem: I have no idea what Romney would do, and neither does anyone else. He’s a businessman and a politician, and if violating freedom of conscience helped him ram the legislation through Congress, I’m not sure he’d balk at doing so. Again, though, I have no idea what Romney would do in this position, and neither does anyone else. I can tell you for a fact, though, that Dr. Paul would never let this happen. Ever. How about Obama’s violation of freedom of conscience for religious groups? The Catholic church is on the verge of being persecuted. Not a pressing issue for you? Or do you think that Romney would do the same as Obama and force Catholic hospitals to provide abortificients, for example?
If Ron Paul got the nomination, his campaign donations would rival Obama’s. Do you think the Republican party would honestly let Obama win to spite Paul? Furthermore, if Obama’s war chest makes a campaign against him insurmountable, why is anyone bothering at all?Obama has a billion dollars for the campaign. But, he’d probably only have to spend a little of it to beat Ron Paul.
I disagree with the latter part. Openly targeting Catholics and highlighting the “war on Catholicism” would practically win the election for Obama. There are enough people in this country who hate the Catholic Church that would thrill even at the phrase “war on Catholicism.” The key would be using Obama’s “war on Catholicism” to illustrate his repeated disregard for the Constitution and for the first amendment. Which candidate actually cares about the Constitution? He sort of rambles, imo. The key to defeating Obama is highlighting his failures as a president, and highlighting to Catholics his war on Catholics.
Why is he doing so poorly? I thought that was obvious. People like you who are parroting the message of major media outlets like CNN, CNBC and “Faux” News. People who insist, in spite of the facts, that Paul is a nobody who has no chance. Paul is constantly being ignored by the media: “Faux” News literally referred to Paul’s second place victory in New Hampshire as “not counting,” and declared Jon Huntsman the “real” second place winner, among many other times they have openly and deliberately ignored him; Paul has frequently and deliberately been short-changed on speaking time at the debates (in one instance, he was allowed to speak for 93 seconds in a 90 minute long debate.) I believe the Primary voters don’t really know Paul well at all, given the fact that his campaign only currently holds less than $2 million in funds which is paltry compared to Gingrich and Romney (as a side note, Romney’s top contributors are Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, and Morgan Stanley. Ron Paul’s? U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy.). While he hasn’t yet won a primary, he’s still ahead of Santorum in terms of delegates, and as the primaries move west, and Gingrich and Romney get nastier, he is sure to secure many more.I read the article. Its true, he polls surprisingly strong against Obama. Notice that he is close in a couple of polls, but further behind in others. Question for you: given that the GOP primary voters know Ron Paul best, why is he doing so poorly? He hasn’t won one primary or caucus has he? It would be the same in the general election. Once the general public got to know him - and Obama would make sure they do - Paul would lose in a landslide.
That is by no means settled. Mathematically speaking, Romney’s strength is currently at 000.34 out of 100, and in early polls, Ron Paul is overwhelmingly in the lead in both California and Texas, which alone would win him nearly a third of the delegates required for the nomination. Romney is almost last in both states, and is likely to remain so.The question is who has the best chance of stopping Obama. That would be Romney and he just took a big step toward locking up the nomination tonight.
Very well put. “Conservatism” and “Liberalism” as used in modern American political discussion are both in fact Liberalism in the classic Catholic understanding of the word. Both are strongly rooted in the ideas of the so-called Enlightenment, and just have slightly different particulars.Conservatives conserve the laws and policies that Liberals have enacted. Conservatives are essentially the Liberals of the previous era, politically one step behind the “forward thinking” Liberals of today.
Tomorrow they will be conserving the policies that the Conservatives of today oppose. I’m not even being snarky; it was once conservative to oppose adventuristic military endeavors, but the Liberals pushed for it. Now military adventurism is a Conservative staple. This is just one example of many.
Peace and God bless!
That is inaccurate. He had a consistent pro life record as governor. Even though he was a Republican governor in a liberal state he never flip flopped on the issue of same sex marriage. He has no pro-life or pro-marriage bona fides.

Wouldn’t a speaking role (and influence on the party platform, etc.) depend more on delegate count than the percentage in any one state? Dr. Paul made it clear that he was skipping FL–if I heard correctly, he didn’t have a single paid staffer in the state–so that he could spend time and money in places where he could actually win delegates (the caucuses and smaller state primaries).Well, I’m sorry to say that Ron Paul only received 7% of the vote today, and I do mean that. Good point. He may have calculated that the winner takes all states aren’t worth campaigning in.Wouldn’t a speaking role (and influence on the party platform, etc.) depend more on delegate count than the percentage in any one state? 7% is a poor showing, but Gingrich got just as many delegates (0) from FL as Paul did, and spent a lot more money and time doing so. Romney won the state through sheer force of advertising dollars and one good debate performance.
I admit to not being a political expert so I am open to correction on all this. But it seems that Paul could end up being a kingmaker at the convention if the race between Romney and Gingrich does not result in a clear winner. And I think that Gingrich still stands a good chance of doing well in the other Southern states.
