This has truly been a great success story for humankind, but especially Catholicism. And we can use all of the good PR we can get!

Liza - Thanks for the post. I found it very interesting. I did not realize that the miners were rescued on the anniversary of the miracle of the sun (Fatima).

Also for those who cannot play the video, the miners had requested rosaries and a statue of Blessed Mother so they could make a shrine to her and pray for their rescue.

There is no such thing as an athiest in a foxhole. When we humans are faced with peril, it is God given instinct for us to reach out and call to Him. It is a pity that so many of us wait until that time, but we are given trials for our own purification.

Question: were the miners ever at any point able to participate in some sort of makeshift mass? Was there a eucharist delivered to them? I understand that under such extraordinary circumstances they were most likely excused from their obligations, but I wonder if any such provisions were provided.

Its a good question, and the blog GetReligion.org took the media to task for not reporting on the matter. I guess the English speaking world will not learn the answer for some time, but one of the commenters made this observation:
Obviously a video broadcast of Mass would be good, but you can’t actually have more than a spiritual communion at that huge distance. (Unless you sent a pyx down the shaft and commissioned someone an EMHC, which you might be able to do at a distance; but one would be reluctant to put the Blessed Sacrament into harm’s way. Obviously, it’s the call of the priest who’s there and the people running the rescue operations.)

when i saw the miners being rescued on the 13th of october the thought did cross my mind if they had been praying to our lady. 👍
 
Beautiful news, I was so happy and uplifted when the miners were freed, gave me so much joy!
