I respond in the EF where I can respond, like the “et cum spiritu tuo” , at the preface, the “domine non sum dignus”, the deo gratias etc.This question is for those who attend both an EF and occasionally an OF. Since during an EF it is pretty quiet and you don’t usually respond the same as in the OF, when you attend an OF do you pray quietly or out loud with the rest.
For approximately four years, I have assisted the EF Mass on Sunday. The Augustinian Canons Regular who pastor our community and administer the Sacraments taught us that ALL the responses [traditionally made by the altar servers] are to be made by the entire congregation. We were taught the correct Latin pronunciations of ALL the prayers and responses of the EF Mass and are expected to respond unison with the servers. Between our assigned prayers however, there is dead silence.This question is for those who attend both an EF and occasionally an OF. I do whatever the rubrics call for, or, if they do not specify, whatever is the custom. The only things I do differently than most are to receive Communion on the tongue and kneeling and I avoid shaking hands for the Kiss of Peace. I even sing the songs unless they are theologically objectionable.This question is for those who attend both an EF and occasionally an OF. So, I am curious, what do you do when the priest or deacon instructs us to “Show each other a sign of that Peace.” Do you simply ignore those around you, and stay consumed within yourself and you prayer, or do you go around kissing everyone in sight, as a literal interpretation of the instructionI avoid shaking hands for the Kiss of Peace.

I smile and nod at people. If I am with my family, I hug or kiss family members. No theological significance - I just don’t like shaking hands. I kind of do the same thing. I think some times people get a little carried away with the sign of peace and feel they can’t miss anyone. I shake hands with those nearest me, maybe one or two behind me and then return to our Lord.Haha, do you kiss people at Mass? If some guy tried that I’m afraid I’d punch first and think later, haha.
I try to set a good example at Mass so I’m always torn at the kiss of peace. I don’t want to hurt people’s feelings who might be new or poorly catechized, but I also hate turning my back on Our Lord on the altar just then. Usually I shake hands with those nearest and stop to kneel as soon as father says “Angus Dei…” even if people are still trying to get my attention. It never feels like I get it just right, another reason the EF is more comfortable for me.
