my uncle recently passed away so i was looking over some Catholic prayers for death and people dying and one prayed that the departed soul would rest in peace. since i am in RCIA and just this past meeting we talked about purgatory and the cleansing before entering Heaven, so…
how can we praying that a departed soul will rest in peace if we are hoping they are in purgatory (as i assume a cleansing “fire” cannot be peaceful)?

I will be so thankful and at peace when I enter Purgatory. The joy of not going to hell will be a blessing.

We are praying for their eternal state, not their temporal. By way of example, indulgences often have a time period associated with them. This is because the state of being purged is not thought to be an eternal state, but a temporal state which leads to the eternal. Thus, the element of time is somehow involved in the process. We pray for their eternal state, and offer our sufferings up on behalf of the holy souls in purgatory so that their temporal state of purgation may be mercifully shortened.

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in Purgatory especially all deceased members of catholic answers forums, and also for all deceased family, friends ,relatives, benefactors, aquaintances, ancestors and enemies of every catholic answers forums member, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

Eternal rest grant unto them oh lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them, may their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of god rest in peaceAmen

By praying that they rest in peace, we are praying for their transition from purgatory to Heaven.

From the Ecumenical Council of Florence:
Council of Florence:
Also, if truly penitent people die in the love of God before they have made satisfaction for acts and omissions by worthy fruits of repentance, their souls are cleansed after death by cleansing pains; and the suffrages of the living faithful avail them in giving relief from such pains, that is, sacrifices of masses, prayers, almsgiving and other acts of devotion which have been customarily performed by some of the faithful for others of the faithful in accordance with the church’s ordinances.
Since we are all united in Christ, when the purifying “fruits of repentance” have not been made by a person, other members can help in their purification:

From Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical Spe Salvi:
Benedict XVI:
The souls of the departed can, however, receive “solace and refreshment” through the Eucharist, prayer and almsgiving. The belief that love can reach into the afterlife, that reciprocal giving and receiving is possible, in which our affection for one another continues beyond the limits of death—this has been a fundamental conviction of Christianity throughout the ages and it remains a source of comfort today. Who would not feel the need to convey to their departed loved ones a sign of kindness, a gesture of gratitude or even a request for pardon? Now a further question arises: if “Purgatory” is simply purification through fire in the encounter with the Lord, Judge and Saviour, how can a third person intervene, even if he or she is particularly close to the other? When we ask such a question, we should recall that no man is an island, entire of itself. Our lives are involved with one another, through innumerable interactions they are linked together. No one lives alone. No one sins alone. No one is saved alone. The lives of others continually spill over into mine: in what I think, say, do and achieve. And conversely, my life spills over into that of others: for better and for worse. So my prayer for another is not something extraneous to that person, something external, not even after death. In the interconnectedness of Being, my gratitude to the other—my prayer for him—can play a small part in his purification.

When we know we are in purgatory, we are in peace because we know we have been saved.
Yes, we are suffering in purgatory, but we know when we are there that our perfect happiness is near, and that we will be with God for eternity.

You can also pray for him that God can make him enter in Heaven sooner.

As a Roman Catholic Priest I always celebrate Mass for the Holy Souls of Purgatory. I made the Heroic Act of Charity in favor of the Holy Souls of Purgatory.

BTW, if anyone wants a good collection of prayers for the Holy Souls in Purgatory

Prayers, Promises, and Devotions for the Holy Souls in Purgatory
by Susan Tassone

It has tons of prayers in there. I’ve been going through it, there’s a lot of stuff in there. I’m going to have to take the ones I like most and integrate them into my daily life. There are also prayers in there for Holy Hour as well.
