That’s the global population of the Eastern Catholic Churches. There are a couple hundred million Eastern ORTHODOX. The majority are in Russia mind you.

That’s still only 150 million (with just over 100 million in Russia) compared to 1.2 Billion…less than 10%. While it seems large it’s incredibly minor in comparison…again, makes more sense as to their influence compared to Protestants–there are 280 million Pentecostals alone.

The entire comprehensive Eastern Orthodox system is less than 280 million—so less than the number of Pentecostals. And again, that’s really minor. We don’t hear much out of Pentecostals as a whole, either.

I’m not saying that they are not important, but they are NOT as visible because they are, in global terms, tiny.

@Xanthippe_Voorhees your numbers are wildly inaccurate.

The actual numbers:

About 15-20 million Eastern CATHOLICS in full communion with the Holy See

About 350 million Eastern Orthodox

About 100 million Oriental Orthodox

About 600,000 Assyrians.

So as you can see, Eastern Christians make up nearly half a BILLION of the world’s 2.4 billion Christians - that’s significant.

He could but it is highly unlikely.

Popes these days identify more strongly with the “Servant of Servants” description given by Pope St Gregory the Great. Modern populations don’t resonate with the allegory to monarchy as much as past generations would have, and I am not speaking about select people already within the Church. I am talking about the far more important demographic: secular people outside of the Church.

Where are you getting your numbers?

The Eastern under the Latin, according to Zenit, has 16 million. That’s in your 15 to 20 range.

The Eastern Orthodox themselves have 270 milion according to this article What Is the Eastern Orthodox Denomination?

Oriental Orthodox, have 86 millon, not 100 million.

Each branch is VERY small. Sorry, you don’t just get to add them all up because they are all doing their own thing.

There are 985 million Protestants.

Here’s the breakdown

2.4 Billion Christians

Latin Rite Catholics -1.2 Billion (with 16 million being Eastern–same as the 16 mil southern baptists)
Protestants- 900 million (985 including Anglicans)
Eastern Orthodox- 270 million (less than the 280 million Pentecostals
Oriental Orthodox-86 million (slightly more than the 85 million Anglicans )
Non-Trinitarian-35 million
Independent Catholic-18 million
All others- 1 million

Well its nice to see you write off all of the 400,000,000 souls in Eastern Christendom as insignificant.

No wonder why the East constantly says Westerners marginalize them.

St. Spyridon, pray for us

I said they were important, don’t try to twist this into some kind of pity party for the East.

The question was asked…why would people care about the Latin Church and have issues with it’s re-taking of the tiara when it’s a practice the Eastern Church & Eastern Orthodox still do.

And the answer is–visibility. The Latin Catholic church makes up half of the 2.4 Billion Christians worldwide. Protestants come in at a pretty close second. The Eastern Orthodox are a distant 3rd. This means they are far less visible and their actions do not have as great a global impact. That’s just the way it works. That’s not “marginalization” that’s reality. They are a minority. What they do–for better or worse–has far less global impact than the Latin Church.

The Latin Catholic Church is the biggest portion of the biggest religion globally. There are, in comparison, 1.8 billion Muslims and 1.1 Billion Hindus. So when it comes to what the world sees (and therefore can judge) the Eastern church is tiny

Also. Eastern Orthodox + Orential is just over 300 million, not 400.

@Xanthippe_Voorhees the numbers for Eastern Christians vary quite a bit. There are various reasons, but different sources will give different numbers.

Total Eastern Orthodox range from 250m - 450m

Oriental Orthodox range between 85m - 110m

Only the Assyrians we can say are definitely at about 600k.

Including the 15-20m Eastern Catholics, we get the total number of Eastern Christians coming in anywhere from 350,000,000 at the least, to as many as 580,000,000.

Part of the problem is many of these Eastern Christians live in countries that were either formerly or are currently either communist or Muslim, so it’s difficult to get accurate numbers.

Uhhh no. Those numbers don’t even make sense. Give me a valid source. Even wikipedia

Go to wikipedia then and read.

I’ve studied this in depth, the number of Eastern Orthodox varies between 250m to 400m

Link, please.

This article states 250 million…nothing on your 400 mil figure

The Encylopedia Britianica

lists the most reliable figures at just north of 200 million

The Paul VI tiara is kept in Washington, DC. I enjoyed being able to see it on display at the Basilica.

I remember how people would make fun of Benedict’s papal red shoes. I remember John Paul II usually wore brown shoes, so a lot of people forgot that it was traditional for Popes to wear red shoes “walking in the blood of the martyrs.”

If people could spill that much ink over Benedict’s shoes (“Oh my goodness! Is that Prada?! Such decadence!”) (no, it wasn’t), I can’t imagine the conniptions the media would have if someone dusted off a tiara and put it back into rotation.

I never said there are 400m EO.

I said some estimates put it as high as 450m.

There are probably about 300-350m in all.

And I don’t consider that insignificant, considering there are 7.6 billion people on earth all together, 300m is a lot of people.

I never said insignificant. Jeepers Creepers do you want to put words in my mouth.

They are simply a minority and VERY MUCH less visible than Latin Catholics.

Even if you try and bump it up to half a billion, they are STILL a relatively small world religion. They do not get the same degree of attention because there are less of them. That’s just the way things work. It doesn’t make them “insignificant” or “less than” it simply means that what they do is never, ever going to be viewed on the same scale as what is done in the Latin Church.

Anyway, endless speculation on religious demographics is totally off topic.

I originally replied to what you wrote here:

People don’t really care about the Eastern or the Orthodox because they are TINY. They are less than 1.5% (or 16 million) of 1.2 billion Catholics. There are nearly as many Southern Baptists in the US alone --15.2 million–as there are Eastern & Orthodox combined in the world. In general, unless a southern baptist does something really wacky, we don’t hear about it. But we hear about the Latin Rite Pope beucase the scope is astronomically larger…nearly 67 TIMES larger.

That quote made it seem to me like you were saying the total number of Eastern Christians was about 20 million, which is why I said that number was wildly inaccurate because the total number of Eastern Christians is actually about 350,000,000.
