I agree with this… Anther poster above sad that it would be nice to find a middle ground between the tiara and the current papal mitre.

Do you want a coronation ceremony?
Not as such. I do think it would be appropriate to have a ceremony where the Holy Father is somehow vested in the tiara, but not exactly a coronation as is done for civic monarchs. So I would not want to see a complete restoration of the older practice.

Could a Pope reinstate the papal tiara if he so desired and have a coronation mass as opposed to what occurs now? I don’t want to debate the implications of such a thing, but rather if it simply could be done.

edit I also find it interesting that Paul VI asked for his successors to continue the coronation rite…
Sure, but it would require a pope with exceptionally poor sense of aesthetics… It would also help if the Pope was about 6’6", handsome AND looked good in a hat.

A group had one designed and produced for Pope Benedict XVI. Not a bad looking papal tiara either, as such things go. It was made in Bulgaria by nuns who have experience making Eastern Catholic and Orthodox crowns/miters, so it’s not a huge deal to get one made if you’re willing to pay for it.

There are always simulations to look at:

what makes you mention aesthetics?
Intrinsically, the papal tiara just isn’t a good looking topper from the get-go. Some are obviously worse than others:

I’d like to better understand the details of the auction that sent this bad-boy to the National Shrine in WDC.

I would say it depends upon the face of the wearer… Benedict has a rather short face, which made your photoshop of him rather unflattering… and yes, I do agree that Paul IV’s is quite bad

All i’ve heard is that some wealthy Catholics put up the money to buy it, gave it to the Nat’l shrine, and Paul vi gave the money gained away

Yes, face size/shape also plays a very big deal. I think the physical stature of the man plays a big part of it too. Big pointy hats tend to look comical/odd on small men. If the next pope looked like Tom Selleck, he could pull off a tiara with ease. Something like this is FAR better than what Paul IV wore:

Yes, I have heard that too. It would be nice to know the details.

Most definitley… although most Popes, especially those in the 19th century-> present, are not the most ohysically imposing

Some Eastern Catholic prelates already wear some pretty wild headgear. I don’t think it would be a bit deal to have a tiara made today:

that’s already been witnessed to earlier in the thread… all f those presentation tiaras were made by EC or other eastern rite craftsmen

To me, it comes across as Pharisaical that someone literally made Pope Francis a crown, using their time, effort, and money,

A tiara for every Pope

The President of the Assembly of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Trajko Veljanoski, has presented Pope Francis with a tiara. Benedict XVI and John Paul II before him, also received papal tiaras as gifts

but he won’t wear it because “I have to show off how humble I am!”

“Lord, I thank thee that I am not like other men…”

Who am I to judge the Pope tho.
I don’t know about “Pharisaical”, but Francis is VERY concerned about his image. Had he chosen the el cheapo pectoral cross and ring, the black pants and shoes and all the rest in private and not commented on them, that would be one thing. At times however I was wondering if an ad agency from Madison Avenue was directing his choices and then publicizing them?

I think it is unseemly to insult the headwear of past Popes.

Okay, allow me to re-phrase. It is unseemly IMO to insult the appearance of past Popes or what they wore.

again, who? If I have in this thread, I sincerely apologise…

Hi, it is tiresome to type much on my phone. I think if one looks back on this thread, there is a lot of comment on how funny-looking / weird the tiaras are.

there was discussion of the flattering nature or lack thereof of the tiara, as well as the general asthetics… I dont think anyone intended to disrespect the tiara or the Holy Father…
