“No salvation outside of the Church” is in the Catechism and it is a quote of the Divine Doctors, the Church Fathers.
As you will recall, in the time of the Early Church Fathers, paganism was in the neighborhood. The intention of the Fathers was to make clear that there was a total difference between Jesus Christ and Roman mythological figures. Inside the Church was the true God. Outside of the Church was a bunch of pagan idols.
So the question was put to the Church Fathers - Where does our salvation come from? Looking around at the pagan temples, they answered that it was only from the true Catholic Church.
In the last few centuries, those pagan temples have been replaced by a multitude of Christian religions and sects all claiming that Jesus died for all people and thus salvation belonged to all people.
Of course Jesus died for all people. This is the explanation from the universal
Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition,*ISBN: 1-57455-109-4 *
“Since Christ died for all, and since all men are in fact called to one and the same destiny, which is divine, we must hold that the Holy Spirit offers to all the possibility of being made partakers, in a way known to God, of the Paschal mystery.” Every man who is ignorant of the Gospel of Christ and of his Church, but seeks the truth and does the will of God in accordance with his understanding of it, can be saved. It may be supposed that such persons would have
desired Baptism explicitly if they had known its necessity.
The missionary mandate. “Having been divinely sent to the nations that she might be ‘the universal sacrament of salvation,’ the Church, in obedience to the command of her founder and because it is demanded by her own essential universality, strives to preach the Gospel to all men”: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and Lo, I am with you always, until the close of the age.”
Christ, Who says that He is always with the Catholic Church, is the One who brings salvation to the ends of the earth. In other words, all salvation comes from Christ, the Head, through the Church which is His Body, us. This is the positive statement which missionaries have preached for centuries.
The positive statement was always contained in the original statement of the Early Church Fathers. As the
Catechism was being put together, the ECF statement became positively expressed without losing its original intent.
This is from the universal

“Outside the Church there is no salvation”
**846 **How are we to understand this affirmation, often repeated by the Church Fathers? Re-formulated positively, it means that all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his Body:
Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; He is present to us in His body which is the Church. He Himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through Baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it."
