Corpus Christi’s outspokenly conservative retired Catholic bishop has tackled the scandal surrounding Boston’s “gay pride” Mass scheduled for next month, calling it a “travesty” that the archdiocese would countenance the event.

Bishop René Henry Gracida on his blog Tuesday discussed the event originally planned by the Rainbow Ministry of St. Cecilia’s Parish to coincide with Boston’s gay pride month, before it was cancelled by the Archdiocese of Boston. Gay rights supporters in the parish were only partially mollified when the archdiocese clarified that the Mass, themed “All Are Welcome,” was being rescheduled for July 10.

The diocese had said it was worried that the original date gave “the unintended impression” that the Mass was meant to celebrate gay pride month. However, the original statement in the church bulletin announcing the Mass had explicitly invited “all friends and supporters of the LGBT community to a Mass in celebration of Boston’s Pride Month.”

Wow, that’s great, just great. All the Church has been missing is more public infighting…

Hey, litesitenews didn’t use the term “homosexualist”. Have they lost their edge?

He was my bishop when we were a part of the Diocese of Corpus Christi and he was a good one. He wasn’t perfect, but, he was never shy about things.

I agree. No good can come from such public comments. I’m saddened that Bishop Gracida wrote such things, that LifeSiteNews reported them, and that the article was posted here. No good will come from this, only harm. 😦

However, the harm and the damage stemmed from the actions that the Archdiocese took. Bishop Gracida spoke out truthfully about the situation. I am not condemning people who are LGBT; however, celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the context of “Gay Pride” is a serious affront to the sacred liturgy of the Church.

Redemptionis Sacramentum notes the following:
78.] It is not permissible to link the celebration of Mass to political or secular events, nor to situations that are not fully consistent with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church. Furthermore, it is altogether to be avoided that the celebration of Mass should be carried out merely out of a desire for show, or in the manner of other ceremonies including profane ones, lest the Eucharist should be emptied of its authentic meaning.
As Catholics, it is within our right to speak out against abuse. Bishop Gracida was within his rights to say something.

I don’t have a problem with hosting a mass called all are welcome, except insofar as they’re treating that like it’s a special theme of THIS mass. What we should be stressing is the fact that the “theme” of ALL masses is “All are Welcome”, which is, conveniently, likewise intimated by the fact that we are the CATHOLIC (Universal) Church.

No, he wasn’t. He doesn’t have authority within that diocese and he is scandalizing and weakening the valid authority of the bishop there. The proper method for a bishop out of control to be dealt with is private inquiry through the vatican and then dismissal by the pope (if needed)… not for a retired bishop to publicly call another bishop to question in an area where he lacks jurisdiction.

However, there is also such a thing as fraternal correction, something that St. Paul used when discussing the question of the Gentiles with St. Peter, no less.

CORRECTED:

Bishop René Henry Gracida on his blog Tuesday posted an article by Joe Sacerdo of the conservative Catholic blog Bryan Hehir Exposed discussing the event originally planned by the Rainbow Ministry of St. Cecilia’s Parish to coincide with Boston’s gay pride month, before it was cancelled by the Archdiocese of Boston.

There is quite a difference: Paul references his fraternal correction in a public letter AFTER THE FACT as a means to illustrate a point for a specific group of people over which he had authority. That’s quite different than a retired bishop injecting himself VERY publicly DURING an event to publicly rebuke the bishop who has authority where he has none.

One is appropriate pastoral care for the flock of the person in question. The other is injecting oneself where they have no right and causing public scandal which detracts from the authority of the valid shepherd in the middle of his having to deal with this obviously complex situation.

Just because you like what he said doesn’t mean he should have said it. His Excellency is retired and has no authority (now or ever) in the archdiocese of Boston. It opens up quite a can of worms when public shots are fired, hopefully you’ll be just as supportive when someone says something you don’t like.

There goes the Red Mass…

Yelling across the room is what kids do. Adults have other options available them…

I guess it’s important to comment on the bishop’s statement, but shouldn’t the Body of Christ be infinitely more upset by the fact that one of Her members is about to show solidarity with the LGBT community? I thought sodomy was a sin that “cried out for the vengeance of heaven”.

When will this end?

If this Bishop is wrong to publicly criticize another Bishop then aren’t the posters here also guilty of the same thing when they criticize this Bishop?

I think that any criticism of a priest or bishop (or brother or sister) must be framed with restraint and charity. However, I also think that low visibility persons such as us making a criticism is much different than a bishop publicly criticizing another bishop. That sort of thing undermines episcopal authority and the unity of the Church.

Then, would you say that St. Paul’s fraternal correction of St. Peter, as recorded in Acts, was wrong? It was, after all, public.

Father, the Red Mass has centuries of tradition. The “Gay Pride Mass” does not have any precedent and is more along the lines of marking something secular

I don’t know what the Mods say about this, but we don’t know if he is a Priest and as such should be given this title.

He is a priest. I can vouch for that because, although I do not know him personally, we have had several exchanges in the Liturgy and Sacraments forum and, even though we do not agree on many things, I do not doubt that he is a priest.
