Police came, took my statement, asked for a signature, and went over and wrote a citation to the neighbor. I’m not sure what happened here, but I’m very thankful!

Poop is the last thing I’m concerned about. (Although it has been a problem.)

Great to see there is some headway on this situation! Perhaps that will change things for the better. Maybe they’ll finish building that fence…

I hope you’re keeping copies of all transactions. Sometimes when things like this happen documents can get lost, especially when it’s in someone’s best interest.

Yes, sometimes the mere existence of a ‘paper trail’ can make all the difference. I hope they can learn to control their dogs. You should not have to live in fear-for yourself, and your children-because some people just won’t take the time to train their pets. Hope all goes well…

I live in Texas, so it would be legal (though perhaps not advisable) to shoot the dog for trespassing, it might be similar in your area. My uncle (a police officer) said (at least from a legal perspective) it would be better to shoot and ill a trespasser than say use rubber bullets which would harm without killing, presumably because we could be held liable for the injuries, but a dead person can’t press those charges, and we would be legally protected by trespassing laws.

I live in Georgia - a “stand your ground” state. When my wife got her carry permit, the guns dealer, who is also a friend, told her the same thing.

A taser might work on dogs.

Guns and tasers and pepper spray only helps if you are holding it when the dogs show up!

Yes. That is true. And unlikely you would just happen to be holding that. Aside from aggressively going after the owners legally I don’t know what to say. We cant advise you to do something unsafe or illegal.

I felt so dumb the next second after I closed the door of the car to protect the kids because I realized I didn’t have my phone out yet. I couldn’t even call for help!

If my neighbor was a drunk who came over to my house and screamed at me and threated to beat me up on occasion, I don’t think the cops response would be “Well, you’re within your right to shoot him if he’s on your property.” I’m not saying it isn’t true, but why the heck should I have to?

Ok here’s s thought. Now I’m not saying this is fair but what if you approached the owners and offered to help get the dogs some training. If you went to the training classes and the dogs saw you as an authority to give commands that might help. Again. No one wants to have to do that but if you are concerned about your safety you might have to take extreme measures.

I work well over full time as a teacher. I have two children under the age of six and I’m currently in the hospital with a surgical team down the hall ready to deliver a premature number three at a moment’s notice. I honestly and truly don’t have time (or money) to train someone else’s three dogs.

They would tell you to shoot a violent drunk who threatened you, rather than arrest him? Where the heck do you live?

Texas, probably.

Fastest way to train the dogs is to give them some immediate painful consequences for being where they’re not supposed to be. Like taser or pepper spray. Doesn’t require a lot of time. This isn’t advice as it would not be a casual thing to do.

That said, it shouldn’t be necessary since the cops took a report and issued a citation so the path has been opened to using the legal system to fullest extent possible. You should find out what was in the citation, whether it comes with a fine and whether the consequences escalate with repeated violations.

I just don’t see spraying a cloud of pepper spray at dogs in an enclosed garage, that I then have to walk through. I don’t know the ins and outs of pepper spray, but I just have some questions about how that might go.

I’d only explore it as a means to protect your children if they were in immediate danger.

I don’t have any idea how much they cost, but maybe one of those cameras that people attach to trees out in the woods to see what animals are coming along? They are motion activated. You might be able to catch the dogs on your property when you aren’t home on that camera.
