…hence, the beast applies as much to Noah’s day as it does to Egypt, and Antiochus, and pagan Rome, as well as our own modern minor apostasy, in addition to the final manifestation at the great apostasy of the very end.
The Augustianian view would really restrict the Apocalypse to the time between the cross and the 2nd coming; though I suppose there could be foreshadowings in the past. I thinki this is largely because the time between the cross and the 2nd coming is when satan is bound. Prior to the cross, satan had much more power over man, and thus in a sense the configuration of the spiritual universe was much different, at least from man’s perspective.

Interestingly, Benedict XVI seems to confirm the age of the church.

Pope Benedict XVI recently said:

"John addresses them, showing acute pastoral sensitivity to the persecuted Christians, whom he exhorts to be steadfast in the faith and not to identify with the pagan world. His purpose is constituted once and for all by the revelation, starting with the death and Resurrection of Christ, of the meaning of human history. "’

Interestingly, also, he used language from the same audience in the Letter to the Chinese:

“The word of God helps us, once again, to discover the mysterious and profound meaning of the Church’s path in the world. In fact ‘‘the subject of one of the most important visions of the Book of Revelation is [the] Lamb in the act of opening a scroll, previously closed with seven seals that no one had been able to break open. John is even shown in tears, for he finds no one worthy of opening the scroll or reading it (cf.* Rev* 5:4). History remains indecipherable, incomprehensible. No one can read it. Perhaps John’s weeping before the mystery of a history so obscure expresses the Asian Churches’ dismay at God’s silence in the face of the persecutions to which they were exposed at the time. It is a dismay that can clearly mirror our consternation in the face of the serious difficulties, misunderstandings and hostility that the Church also suffers today in various parts of the world. These are trials that the Church does not of course deserve, just as Jesus himself did not deserve his torture. However, they reveal both the wickedness of man, when he abandons himself to the promptings of evil, and also the superior ordering of events on God’s part’’.8”
  1. Benedict XVI, General Audience (Wednesday 23 August 2006), L’Osservatore Romano, English edition, 30 August 2006, p. 3.
Also interestingly, is the fact that one of the most celebrated symbols in China is the dragon.
…Anyway, don’t know if this helps?

Thanks, Spauline, I understand your view a little more, now.

Again, I dont know how people can claim to read and know hebrew scripture and refuse to believe that Israel, that is the Messiah, land and the people; are smack dab in the middle of end times prophecy.
We are all smack dab in the middle of the Millenium (if not towards the end, but who really knows). Perhaps deceiving people to believe that the secular state of Israel is a prophetic state could be a manifestation of the beast’s power. I think your thoughts are more along the lines of protestant dispensationalism.

Hi, Mark,

Well, wait a minute, I am not reducing the apoc to FULL allegory. Of course, in its ultimate sense, it unveils the spiritual ages of the Church that complete Salvation history. I’m saying that, in a special layer of meaning, the beast can be seen as an image of any great ages of sin, but not that the whole of the Book is merely a figurative representation of any age in salvation history.

In fact, let me just state this briefly: I see the main chronology of the three sevens as an image of the three great stages of the saint (the purgative, the illuminative and the unitive), which were in fact already the structure of the Jewish OT history, so that, in point of fact, the age of the Church is an actual fulfillment of what the Jews traversed spiritually.

1 = unity
10=testimony
100=election; children promise
1000 = divine completeness
1000 * 1000 = a mult. number.
1000 * 1000 and 1000’s of thousands=mult. mega number.

This might sound far fetched but this is how it came to me.
I looked for structure,seen a lot of repetitive,symbolism,and ala gory.
It came as a repetitive story. I got the story as a flash,in 77segments as below.

77 segments .

11 pages,each page had ------------------------------------------7 elements.

That is 11 pages of 7 elements adding up to 77 segments
7*11=77

Introduction---------------------------------------------------------------- 3 pages
Body---------------------------------------------------------------------------7 pages
Final warning----------------------------------------------------------------1 page

For a total of -----------pages 11*7 elements---------------------11 pages

Who determines what a “page” is? Does this vary by page size, font size, etc.?

Make one for your self. It looks like a calender month but make it.

11 squares wide.
7 squares hight.
make the squares one inch *one inch square,.
when you have it done it should look like a calender month.
But with 77 squares.
When you are finished I’ll tell you what to put in the squarer’s
It is worth it to try.

Not much unlike a calender month, of seven days ,
sun , Mon,Tue,wed,Thu,Fri ,Sat.
even thistle can engineer that.But you make it 11 squares wide.
11 squares wide, and 7 squares high .Remember you will be one of the first, in two thousand years ,to open the door mentioned in Revelations.
I would suggest, thistle, to go to a easier thread.

Any body can do this, give it a try.

The deepest key in understanding revelations is that it isn’t people that are cast out of the New Jerusalem, but the offenses in people. A murderer raised by a thief. A diplomat raised by a former president. It doesn’t matter. Only God himself can approach things suitably for each individual. There is a great personal involvement with God, but in the end you must also get to know him personally; this is not necessarily a fun process either. The reason the bible ends is the separation of light from darkness. The only one who could say a person was only darkness is God, and I dare not step on his ground in thinking I could judge a person as he does. By the way, God doesn’t even judge, but the things written in the book, his books, are the judges. And in each hand ways the wound of a cold father and the cold son that came from such. The avenging terrorist whose family was killed by an Israeli missile. The person born with a deformity which makes them feel inadequate all these days of their existence. Adler the psychiatrist thought the feeling of inadequacy at the heart of mature development. Freud thought more of desire, fear, and of course sex. Jung and his deep gnostic collective-conscience maybe one day awakening as God himself. What I am saying is this world and its people do not need judgment but care, and what care is right for them. And an ultimate God that knows best how to rebuke and chasten them, so that they bare fruit.

Pages are vertical.1 to 11
Elements are horizontal.1 to 7
You should have 11 pages,of 7 elements horizontal.

You Walt, should look at December 12, 2012 the end of The Mayan calender. The Mayans had a sacred tree in their text, just as in the Indo-European cultures. They also had a knowledge of astronomy reaching far beyond any other of that time. There is much craze over it now because of the Mel Gibson film. Dec 21, 2012 does actually have a significance astronomically, it is rather difficult to understand unless rigorously studied, it has something to do with the sun’s shadow being aligned with the center of the milky-way galaxy. Of the brief once over I did of one of these fanatic sights, I discover that we, they preach, will enter a hall of mirrors in which we look at ourselves deeper and painfully truer, and began a deeper respect for others by facing our own faults, those who don’t question their own flaws perish, and those who go through, live were technology and former wants are futile.

well, now, there is truth in the reality that no person can judge another person’s SUBJECTIVE motives. Admittedly, it is a mystery why persons do what they do. And, to be sure, the Church understands that she gave scandal in the Middle Ages and that this was the primary seed of Christian division, which in turn scandalized the world and caused a certain disillusionment with the pursuit of supernatural truth. Yes, I agree, Clovis. You want me to summarize the objective history of the last 2000 years. Sure! Here goes:

First Romans torture and kill Christians. Then Christians gain freedom and for a brief time enforce their religion with the death penalty. Then Christians start major disputes about the Divine Nature. Then from this arises a religion called Islam. So then Muslims kill Christians. Later, the Pope’s crusaders, having been involving killing Muslims back, then totally destroy Constantinople, so then the entire Eastern Church says that Pope can go you know what. Then Catholics set up courts and horribly torture persons who are at least perceived to be in objective “heresy”. Then most bishops become lazy and morally lax slobs, so then whole entire communities rebel and say you’re hypocrites, we only need the Bible. So then Catholics kill more heretics, heretics kill Catholics, and heretics kill other types of heretics.

That is a rough summary of the period of 60 AD to 1700 AD. And so I agree, if you intended to say this, that the modern apostasy is not totally condemnable. Bad things done in the name of religion have given religion a bad name.

And if you imply that this mess can be cured, I absolutely agree. I think that God can show humanity that it still needs him and can cure these sad and tragic wounds and restore humanity anew. Amen.

I agree, we must sympathize with our separated brothers and sisters that our own members have sinned and apologize for that, and reach out in love, and dialogue in love, helping them to rediscover the beauty of the faith, the fullness of the faith. Yes, I do believe that the devout members of the separated communities and Churches are seeking God as best as they can. And I agree that humanity is largely wounded and doesn’t know where to turn. They need love, not hell fire and brimstone. I agree.

But you still should admit that it is possible that, even though we can never judge it, many persons are in mortal sin today. For whereas subjective conditions can diminish a person’s culpability, there is not much excuse for living indifferent to religion completely when one has no serious psychological barrier. I mean, admittedly, there may be some people who are totally apostate in an objective sense but because of an emotional wound that is not their fault, but I cannot help but believe that there may be many people (not that we can ever know for sure who these people are) who ARE simply superficial and really don’t care about God because of deliberate pride.

I mean, if the angels could receive the total Revelation of God’s Plan for this world and experience the grace and love of God, and some of them tell God to take total hike, and they didn’t have any material distractions to choose, just only pride, how much more so is spiritual depravity possible for creatures who have sex and dorittos and the Super Bowl and Aerosmyth to distract them from the concern of the Spiritual?

I can tell you are some one I could relate to better on this site. Think of it in terms of the Pharisees and Sadducees which Christ warned of, The Pharisees lead to his own death, The Inquisition, Islamic Extremism, Evangelistic ‘hell fire ranting’, and so on. While the other half of the world unfortunate lost the concept of God, and even sadder spirituality, which must be pure misery, I’m sure. I think Jesus felt sorry for the Sadducees, as in the end, they thought they were nothing, and that God would never employ a sort of Isaiahian justice. While the Pharisees he was really angry with, as they assume to know so much and have an answer for everything as though they were as The Lord himself. This boiling and bubbling of the two extremes mentioned by Christ will also, as Christ said, lead to nations rising against nations, and cold hearts barking, either authority of the God they crafted in their heads, or the futility of existence and bowing to worldly pleasures.

Oh, yes, Clovis, I think we will get along well! Especially your mention of the extremes. Yes, amen. This is one of the greatest metaphors I’ve learned. Picked it up from Peter Kreeft. For it is no coincidence that there is a right and a left, for the human soul has two faculties, the intellect and the will. And modern politics decieves us into thinking that your intellect must be in the same state as your will. That is, if your head is hard, so should your heart be. If your heart is soft, so should your head be. But here is perhaps an incredible revelation, if even someone can comprehend it: your head must be HARD, but your heart must be SOFT! So then, there is goodness to both sides, namely, the conservative’s head is hard, the liberal’s heart is soft. But neither side is fully correct. We need the balance above.

Thank you for your comments, Clovis. I look forward to dialoguing more!

In the study of revelations one has to remember Rev.22/18

Only God knows the future. Why do you waste time trying to figure out Revelations? Jesus made it very clear we do not know the day or hour of our death and we should live a sin free life so that if we are suddenly taken we can be sure of being saved. It is irrelevant when the end days are. There is nothing to prepare for as Jesus said we should always be ready.
