Why do Protestants keep professing Revelations 13 as the Catholic Church to be the Anti-Christ?

Dear Joseph,

Relax, not all, I am a Protestant and I am 100% sure that anti Christ is not Catholic.
Anti Christ, in my opinion is a group of people who try to change the law of Love from Jesus to the law of Fear and Oppression.

Neverland.

Thank you.

I can not find anything that would point that out also. I will say it shows that ther are Saints and not dead. Which is a common argument against Catholism.

No Problemo, Joseph.

I see that a lot of Protestants (and Christians in general) are stupidly fighting about which one is the ‘TRUEST WAY’.
We often forget that “Don’t Judge”. It was the words of Jesus Himself.
For me, as long as we believe in Christ, believe in the law of LOVE taught by Jesus, we are all not anti Christ.
While in fact, these days are evil and it’s time for us to get rid of the silly competition and start to feel as One body with Jesus as the head. Catholic is a right hand and Protestant is the left hand, but we have our function.
Sadly, not much people realizing this.

Actually, many protestants use Revelation 17, not 13 to identify the Catholic Church with the Anti-Christ. Of course it doesn’t really work once you really read it, but hey… 😛

Hello JD:

I’m taking a grad course now on that most misunderstood of books, Revelation (singular only–the prof said he’d fail anyone who called it “Revelations”). 🙂 If you want to understand Revelation, you need to understand apocalyptic literature (a common literary style of the time). It employs heavily symbolic language, so numbers, body parts, descriptions etc. can have a hidden meaning. Because of this, it is challenging to interpret the book correctly. And because of that, all sorts of oddball opinions have cropped up about who/what is the 1st beast, the 2nd beast, etc. In order to help you clear it up, try getting a copy of Revelation from the Navarre Bible–it’s awesome! It’s jam-packed with commentary drawn from Sacred Scripture, popes, councils, saints and doctors of the Church. You’d really enjoy it.

It started with the “reformers”, ie the first protestants like Luther. They had to find ways to smear the CC in order to make his position seem credible, what better way to keep people away from the CC than to scare them. The historic protestant creeds contained explicit passages that the Pope was the AC. Smear tactics like this have fueled protestantism from the start.

I’m French ( and Protestant ) and in my country, according to what I know, no Protestant denomination teaches that the Catholic Church ( or the Pope ) is the Antichrist…

Dear Huguenot,

Well, so at least we are the same. I think no SANE Protestants will accuse Catholic Teaching which is based on love as antiChrist.

I’m glad to hear it !!! It seems some US Protestants are quite tough !!! ( some Catholics too … )

It’s true many of the reformers incorrectly thought that the Pope was the anti Christ, but that was understandable after seeing what the church did to all who opposed her. (recant or die)

I think most protestants would see the Catholic church as the woman who rides the beast (Rev 17) who was drunk with the blood of the saints. After all history bears witness to the facts - no single body in history has shed more blood in the name of Christ than the Catholic Church.

During the religious wars, both Catholics and Protestants shed blood ; in Europe, at the time, you had to have the same faith as your King ; where the King was Protestant , the Catholics were persecuted ( in some cases Catholicism was totally banned for some periods in some countries ), and where the King was Catholic, the Protestants were persecuted ; in my country it was the case and Protestantism was persecuted in France for nearly 250 years, with a period of about 80 when they had “more” freedom, but in a very limited way ; there was an “Edict” that granted French Protestants some degree of freedom but in very strict limits, and this Edict was less and less respected until King Louis XIV revoked it, then Protestantism was totally banned from my country for a bit more than a century ; when it was authorized again, it had totally disappeared from some regions, and it was very weak in others …
This past , among other things, explains the very small proportion of Protestants in my country : I’ve already mentioned that we represent about 2% of the population ; before it was totally banned, historians think the Protestant population in France was about 4%-5%.
This doesn’t influence our PRESENT relationships with Catholics which, as I have already said, are generally good …
It creates problems for some of us because there are places where there is no Protestant place of worship : some of us are sometimes totally isolated, depending on the region where we are ; it happened to me and I moved to another part of France in order not to be alone anylonger ( I am single and I was really alone ! ).
It also creates some problems for French Catholics who would like to start ecumenical prayer groups with Protestants : sometimes there aren’t any Protestants around …or not enough !!
On a French Catholic forum two participants told me : you’re Protestant, I’m glad be able to talk with you here, in my town some other Catholics and I would like to start ecumenical groups but we can’t : there aren’t any Protestants here …( the two persons come from different regions )…
I don’t know if it is true that no one shed more blood than the Catholic Church in the past ; in history I 've also learnt about the way Cromwell conquered Ireland, well well…it was pretty bloody and cruel too…
In France we don’t make any connection between the Catholic Church and the Beast or the Whore of Babylon and so on …( I don’t know every Protestant personally of course…maybe some do but it must be a very uncommon position, even if Reformers said so …and probably when they were being persecuted, some French Protestants thought this, but not now, don’t worry !!! )

The prod’s do not know how to interpret revelations . They read with out understanding…false prophecy???
and most catholics don’t either.

it is true that some prophecies ( not only in the Book of Revelation, but also in Daniel for example … ) are very difficult to understand …
but as I have said in my preceding message, most French Protestants do NOT see the Catholic church as the “beast” or the “whore” or “Babylon” , neither do they see the Pope as the anti-Christ …
this position , unfortunately, exists, but seems ( according to my experience ) very rare …( of course I’m talking about FRENCH protestants since I am French and I live in France, I don’t know what the situation is in other countries … maybe we are more used to talking to Catholics since there are about 40 Catholics for each Protestant in my country, so we ALL have contacts with Catholics, sometimes we go to Mass ( for example last Saturday I attended a Catholic wedding … ) , maybe this protects us ( in a “natural” way ) from the extremist points of view you mention …

It’s good to know ,that there is an alternate view to the one that seems to be general in North America,walt2000

but I’ve heard that some televangelists get on very well with Catholics …( including Pat Robertson who shocked French Protestants, inclusive Evangelicals, by saying that Hugo Chavez should be killed … )
it was also the case with Billy Graham, who had good relationships with John Paul II …

All these people, above, don’t know how to interpit Revelations .
One has to wonder what they did to the rest of the Bible.walt2000

Hay guys,
Do me a favor ,read all my posts ,and tell me what you think, honestly,I would really like to hear what you think. And no crackpots ,this is the word of god.there are rules in studying Revelations and Christ wants you to use them .I have been studying Revelations for over 35 years and I use the term Revelations because, if I used the CC terms the prods, in this country Peg you ,as CC ,and will not listen .walt2000
