The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Louis welcomes Most Rev. Robert J. Carlson—Archbishop-elect and tenth bishop of Saint Louis!

At noon today in Rome (5 a.m. CDT), the Press Office of the Holy See announced that His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI has appointed The Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson, Bishop of the Diocese of Saginaw, as Archbishop of St. Louis. He will serve as the 10th bishop and ninth Archbishop of St. Louis.

Bishop Carlson leads the diocese that adjoins the one I am part of. We were just thinking that with him, and the two new appointees in Bishop Boyea (Lansing Diocese) and Bishop Vigneron (Detroit Diocese) we felt more secure with this blessed and holy trinity of Bishops.

You are getting a very good man, and Saginaw is losing one who made great changes and improvements in that diocese. You are blessed. Evidence of his Catholicity is seen in his detractors who opposed and continue to oppose changes to their former liberal goofiness.

His appointement is not a big surprise… americanpapist.com/blog.html

I saw that & said to myself, tenth can’t be right – the St Louis diocese is older than the US!
Here’s a link from the Archdiocese’s website about +Carlson’s predecessors.

Here is an official press release:

I can say that y’all in St. Louis are getting a good bishop. He increased seminarians from four to over twenty, he re-activated the permanent deacon program, implemented the GIRM, and issued statements about the need for confession, among other things.

This is great to hear! I’m in the diocese immediately south of the St. Louis Archdiocese, and I thought a great deal of Abp Burke. St. Louis is a huge diocese in population, small in territory, while ours is huge in territory, small in population. Consequently, the Archbishop of St. Louis has a substantial amount of influence on what happens here.

We sure miss him here in Sioux falls Diocese, but the good that he has done in Saginaw is evident! I wish now Archbishop Carlson the best of luck in St. Louis! God speed, good friend!

Definitely a Benedict Bishop!

In Sioux City, SD, he was the bishop who told Tom Daschle to stop calling himself a “Catholic” because he is illicitly divorced and remarried, and because he’s pro-choice.

In Saginaw, he banned the “Saginaw Blessing” which referred to God with the feminine pronoun.

I see you point out some of the less-than-pleasant things he HAD to do, whether or not you agree with Archbishop Carlson or not, he did them so that they were in line with the church… And the Tom Daschle situation was a necessity. Tom was ‘bragging’ about his Faith (talking about being an altar boy as a child, etc) but was not living his faith life, nor giving a good view of what it means to be a Catholic. Being divorced isn’t a bad thing; re-marrying without seeking the church’s blessing, and the Pro-Choice situation… the Catholic Church stands for Life; no ifs, ands or buts about it. One cannot say they are “Personally apposed,” and still approve something.

Saginaw Blessing- yes, it refers to a feminine god. in scripture God never is called a ‘her,’ only the Father. Truth be told, God is infinite and is above all things and is all things, so He does have both masculine and feminine qualities to him, but Jesus, his son, has only revealed God to us as the Father and himself as the Son; so thus we cannot take it upon ourselves to ‘assume’ his femininity.

… and one minor correction, he was in SIOUX FALLS SD… SIOUX CITY is in Iowa, over 90 miles away from Sioux Falls, SD.

Question too, what does the phrase 'Benedict Bishop" mean?

On a whim, I signed up to get the text message from the Archdiocese. Well, the blessed thing arrived at 5AM (CST) and it woke up my dachshunds (my text alert is LOUD). When I read the text, I was happy. Someone in St. Louis must been up really early.

But, I figured if Obama could send a text message at 3AM to inform folks that he chose Biden, why not the archdiocese of St. Lous?

talk about giving to Caesar what is Obama’s, and giving to God what is God’s:p

3am is a great hour for prayer.

We live in exciting times! God continues to strengthen His Church after a period of darkness. We’re getting some good bishops now.

Supposedly, in the next 5 years, 3 out of 4 bishops in the U.S. will reach mandatory retirement age! This includes Cardinals Mahoney and George. I think the Pope has been appointing men to the bishopric who are much more faithful to Catholic teaching, and indeed, more courageous!

God bless!

👍 No question about it. On another positive note, +Carlson has experience with enforcing Orthodoxy in a resistant diocese. Poor +Burke seemd stunned at the at the vitriole lobbed against him, especially by his own flock. And St. Louis is very conservative. I hope St. Louis has learned a lesson and will unabashedly support +Carlson. I personally have always responded with “I love +Burke” anytime somebody said something awful about him. And that was quite a lot. The look of surprise and horror on their faces when I said this was truly saddening.
