Revised Roman Missal 2011

“Beginning with the First Sunday of Advent, November 27th, 2011 the Catholic Church in the United States will worship according to a new English translation of the Roman Missal.”

Taken from Liguorian (Catholic) Magazine November 2010 issue

With the title of this thread in mind, it is important to mention that NO revisions at all are being made to the Roman Missal. It is only its English translation that has been revised.

I saw a copy of Ligouri magazine just yesterday. It disturbed me that it had an article from Joan Chittister.

I would not recommend this publication or catholic digest or US catholic to anyone, not even my enemies.

I don’t know who Joan Chittister is? 🤷

It is an English translation. However, it is a translation of the third typical edition. Currently, we are using the English translation of the first typical edition promulgated by Paul VI. If no changes have been made why were two typical editions promulgated during the reign of Blessed John Paul II?

No revisions are being made to the Missal as promulgated in Latin. What is being revised is the English translation, The second edition really didn’t have any changes in the text per say but in adding additional prayers and a few changes in the rubrics. This is pretty old news by the way. We are at the end of an almost decade long process.

Just because it has an article from Joan Chittister? You only read newspapers in which you agree with every columnist?

Or does the magazine have a systematic liberal bias that doesn’t appeal to you? Even though I’m fairly orthodox I do read NCR from time to time, I’m not allergic to points of view I don’t agree with, in fact they often help strengthen my orthodoxy.

That’s a really healthy attitude to have, actually. Occasionally reading up on opposing viewpoints is a valuable thing. Sometimes it even leads to changes you didn’t see coming… like conversion, for example.

What about the third typical edition? I cannot understand why there would be new editions if no changes were made to the Missal?

New saints added?
That could be a reason I agree, OraLabora, but when we recall how many canonisations Blessed John Paul II carried out then the number of new editions of the Missal would have been significant in number.

Changes in rubrics, additions of new feasts, solemnities and memorials, removal of children’s Eucharistic Prayers – which some interpret as meaning that their use will require use of the present ‘Sacramentary’ while others interpret it as meaning we can’t use them at all – are some differences.

Thanks you! Do you think we’ll get clarification on whether the children’s EPs can be used?

I’m sure we will be told. I thought their elimination from the Third edition meant they were gone completely but then I read an article in “Today’s Parish” in which the author explained that there was no reason to include them in the Latin version since they were never to be used in Latin but only in the vernacular. Based on that, the author made the leap that we’d have to use the present day Sacramentary. I had always thought that a new edition rendered the previous obsolete.

I wonder if they will simply publish a new supplementary with the Children’s EP the same way they did originally.

John Paul II hasn’t been beatified. The Congregation for the Causes of the Saints has only made a declaration of heroic virtue. He is Venerable John Paul II, not Blessed.

I have finally passed from “Junior Member” to “Regular Member.” Yay. 😃

Based on what I heard from the secretary of the BCDW the Childrens EPs will most likely contained in a supplementary book, much like the one the additional EPs are contained in now,

No, but it would be like an academic astronomy journal that prints articles by ‘flat earthers’.

You really won’t give much credit to the journal for printing stuff that is such obviously wrong.

Thanks for your correction. May I point out you omitted the definite article.

I forgot to ask what is so “bad” or “wrong” about Liguorian and Catholic Digest?

I’ve read some opinions that they are both unorthodox and liberal on some older CAF threads.
