The reason it has taken so long for this new translation is due to the fact that Rome has insisted that there be 1 English translation worldwide. The date for implementing the new translation is the 1st Sunday of Advent 2011. South Africa jumped the gun and started using it already, and Rome was not happy.

They are also insisting nthat there be 1 Spanish edition, translation of that has been a nightmare, ever watch a Mexican try to speak to a Dominican? 😃
I understand that, but even with ONE English translation, the Missals will differ from Conference to Conference because each English speaking country will have its own saints and its own GIRM with the adaptations particular to it. The US implemented the new GIRM years ago. In Canada we’re still waiting to see the GIRM, never mind implementing it.

With the 1975 edition, the US published the Universal GIRM and then put in an appendix with the adaptations for the US. With this latest GIRM, the adaptations have been inserted directly into the GIRM, thus preventing us from seeing the universal text unless we do a search for it. Even the Vatican website uses the US version, something which is very annoying when those of us in other countries try to find the authoritative text.

As for a Spanish Third Edition, I know that South American Spanish speaking bishops published their own translation of the First Edition years ago and used it without permission until Rome finally said “OK, you can keep using it.”
