Rhode Island bishop regrets failure to stop same-sex "marriage"
catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=18748

Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island, said that he was “profoundly disappointed” by the state legislature’s decision to recognize same-sex marriage, and said the vote represented a failure of Catholic influence.
Bishop Tobin said that the legal recognition of same-sex marriage, in America’s most heavily Catholic state, occurred because “so many Catholic politicians abandoned ship on this issue.” He said that the Church should have worked more effectively to preserve the traditional definition of marriage.
well, duh…

In each of the states where legislators are pushing same-sex “marriage” the bishops should require every priest and deacon to preach often about what marriage is and why the gay agenda to re-shape the culture must be curtailed. They should be rallying Catholics to protest in numbers so large that traffic is jammed up. Politicians don’t want to hear from the Catholic hierarchy. But it is essential that the Catholic hierarchy be heard by Catholics. Catholic laity must be convinced how important it is to bring our faith to the public square. We are not doing our jobs to help Jesus to build up His Kingdom here on earth. Bishops, priests, and deacons, please help Catholics to better understand the role they must take to help defend and preserve marriage.

I also saw these comments today from Bishop Tobin:
Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin, head of the diocese of Providence, R.I., said he recently changed his voter registration from Democrat to Republican, noting that the 2012 Democratic National Convention and the Democrats’ strong support for abortion and homosexual “marriage” was the last straw.
“The a-ha moment for me was the 2012 Democratic National Convention – it was just awful,” said Tobin on Tuesday before a meeting of the Rhody Young Republicans in Providence. Tobin is 65 and has been a registered Democrat since 1969.

The running joke is that “We Republicans are not Republicans because we’re any good, is just that the alternatives are so horrid.”

its is a sad commentary that maryland that founded as a Catholic colony and rhode island have both sold out . :sad_yes:

I saw an article about this on Lifesite News

lifesitenews.com/news/bishop-reveals-he-changed-party-registration-from-democrat-to-republican-ov

What surprised me about this was many things. But perhaps people here can answer a few questions about it:
  1. Does being a registered Democrat, for the Bishop meant he voted for the Democratic nominee in every federal election? If not, I would be curious who he may have voted for in 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008.
  2. Was he not aware of Pres. Clinton veto of the partial birth abortion ban?
What I find odd about this is that he also was in the news a few years ago he advised Patrick Kennedy to not receive communion because of his stances on abortion, gay marriage, etc. Since the number of Bishops who are prepared to do this, you can count on one hand, I have to wonder why he waited so long?

Bishop Tobin "deeply regrets’ the passage of gay marriage. Well, what on earth did he expect?

He’s 65, so he’s been around the 60’s, 70’s 80’s 90’s and later.

Where were the Bishops, priests, vowed religious and other Catholic leaders when Catholic education became a place where Catholicism was denigrated, ignored, explained away, and catechesis was ignored or deliberately skewed against Catholic doctrine and belief? Was the mass apostasy of young Catholics not enough to send the signal that something was wrong?

Where were the Bishops, priests, vowed religious and other Catholic leaders when Catholic homilies and presentations denigrated, ignored, explained away, or deliberately skewed against Catholic doctrine and belief? Was the mass apostasy of older Catholics not enough to send the signal that something was wrong?

Where were the Bishops, priests, vowed religious and other Catholic leaders when Catholic institutions stopped being recognizably Catholic, supported abortion, syncretism and imparted an embarrassment in all things Catholic?

Where were the Bishops, priests, vowed religious and other Catholic leaders when their confreres supported abortion, homosexuality, contraception, etc., - did they not see or hear the message that sent?

Where were the Bishops, priests, vowed religious and other Catholic leaders when their confreres had homosexual lovers including children?

We know where they all were. What’s stunning is NOW His Excellency “deeply regrets” the fruits of the Catholic leadership activities for 40+ years.

I ask again, where was he during this time and what on earth did he expect?

Time for the hierarchy and religious to look to the beam in their eye. They squandered their moral authority, failed to teach the faith and now are shocked! shocked!! that they have no moral authority and the “faithful” don’t know their own faith.

So the question for the Bishop now is, what are you going to do about those “Catholic” politicians who voted for this?

Quit playing games, and lay down the hammer.

All it means is that he voted in one of the Democrat primaries. In RI, if someone votes in a primary they are automatically registered in that party. Here in New England that’s just about the only primary that has more than one candidate in it. Most local elections come down to who wins the Democrat primary as the Republicans usually field either no candidate or a weak one.
  1. Was he not aware of Pres. Clinton veto of the partial birth abortion ban?
See the above explanation. Simply being “registered” as a Democrat in Southern New England doesn’t mean much of anything.

As with Patrick Kennedy, the Bishop is most likely handling things privately and individually. Remember it was Kennedy who went public, not Bishop Tobin, when he was told not to receive communion.

If Bishop Tobin came out publicly swinging against politicians it would backfire on him. The local and national press would eat it up and portray him in the worst possible light. The politicians would be possibly permanently alienated from the Church and the local population would perceive them as victims. Publicly spanking them isn’t going to accomplish much.

It seems to me that NOT “publicly swinging against politicians” has backfired and it seems that the Bishop is admitting that. Tiptoeing around to gain approval of the world is usually a losing proposition, imo. It didn’t work here. So what if the press loves you (which I doubt anyway.)

Tobin was very vocal about the Church’s opposition to gay marriage:
Courageous Priest blog
Official statement on RI Senate Action
Catholic League: Bishop Tobin defends Marriage
National Catholic Register praised Bishop Tobin’s opposition to gay marriage
EWTN article on Bishop Tobin’s opposition to gay marriage

Tobin was being humble when he said it was his failure. He certainly had the fortitude to bring the issue to the public.

What I said was if he starts publicly attacking politicians personally/individually he risks having it blow up in his face.

I don’t know if Bishop Tobin went public about Patrick Kennedy but it did become public because I distinctly remember Chris Matthews of MSNBC viciously attack Bishop Tobin over this.

Tobin did not make it public, Kennedy did. Tobin merely responded to what Kennedy had said to the press.

Ahh okay. Makes sense. Still what doesn’t make sense for me is how in 2012 he realized that the Democratic party wasn’t the party for him. Considering how pro-life democrats were summarily kicked out during the Clinton years I would have thought he would see the writing on the wall.

That whole thing about being a registered Democrat and switching to a registered Republican was probably just a bit of showmanship. In RI if you vote in a primary you are automatically registered with that party. Considering that RI is pretty much a one party state, any local election would probably be decided in the primary since there’s often no Republican challenger or if there is its one with little support. So if you want to make your vote count you got to pick your poison in the democrat primary. Not to mention that on a state level abortion rarely comes up. Its most probable that Bishop Tobin voted in a Democrat primary and was thus automatically registered in that party, he just never bothered to disaffiliate until recently. And even then, he’ll probably still be forced to vote in their primary in future elections, he’ll just disaffiliate faster…

it is not a sin to be a democrat
It’s just a sin to accept 90% of the Democratic platform. It’s hard to believe in the sacraments central to the Catholic faith when you also accept the sacraments central to the Democractic party (abortion and gay marriage).

I do admit that Republicans aren’t more Catholic too, though. The Church has spoken out against Libertarian laissez-faire economics. The difference is that abortion and gay marriage are mortal sins, while economics is more of a gray area without strictly defined mortal and venial sins, from what I gather.

90%
