Because people have been told for decades they are murdering the planet by doing such things as driving a bigger car or using an incandescent light bulb. Now they are convinced of their guilt and will latch onto anything, no matter how silly, no matter if it does exactly what it doesn’t propose to do, only so they can feel they are doing something positive to help.And why would we want to further wreck our economy in the midst of a deepening recession?
And they are doing something. By abetting this agenda, they will help to increase fuel prices, thereby raising all prices, at the very time when the global economy, led by the U.S., is through unprecedented spending preparing to turn a global recession into a global depression. The average person reading a story in the paper about polar bears being stranded on ever-shrinking sea ice isn’t going to research the story. They read it, they accept it as it is. They won’t go online or to a library and find out that polar bears swim intentionally in the sea, sometimes hundreds of miles out to sea and back again. They won’t go research the data on sea ice, glacial ice, and polar ice mass to learn any distinctions between them, it’s all ice to them. They picture a globe with the top and bottom white one year, and no white at some year in the future, never stopping to think how that could be in a region where the air temperature runs -65°F to +10°F during the season.
It makes people feel like they are doing something.
Feynman addressed the increasing brittleness of the solid rocket booster o-ring seals with decreasing temperature. The SRB is segmented and the rubber-like o-rings seal the joints between the segments (i.e., keep the hot, high pressure combustion gases on the inside from leaking out). O-ring seal failure caused the Challenger disaster. Challenger launched on a very cold day. The Columbia disaster was caused by tile damage due to chunks of external tank foam insulation popping off during boost and hitting the tiles. The damaged tiles then failed to protect the shuttle when reentering the earth’s atmosphere prior to landing. This is a period of extreme heating during a typical shuttle mission.I wish Feynman was still alive. He was the physicist who at the hearings about the failure of the space shuttle tiles simply put a piece of tile into ice water and showed how britlle it became.
