Ridiculous looking outfit at daily Mass today! Maybe a dress code WOULD be in order!

I work nights as a nurse and often go to daily Mass afterwards at the church nearby! I really like the way the priest there does the Mass, with chanting and always a hymn. Anyways, today he didn’t have his usual altar guy and help with the cup, so at that part of the Mass he asked if anyone could come up and serve as Eucharistic Minister.

Well, a quite stout older woman volunteered! I was quite sleepy this morning, but immediately snapped to. I almost burst out laughing. She was a short, quite overweight woman, well over 60 and probably closer to 70. She had on a very unattractive pair of bright pink shorts and a white tank top! She wore a geeky pair of cheap running shoes with no socks. She was a very large breasted woman, but unfortunately, they were so far south that they’d almost reached Antartica!. But what immediately caught my eye were her black bra staps, one of which was creeping down her shoulder in the most unseemly fashion!

How could she not feel that bra strap? I wanted to run up and try and tuck it up under her scanty white tank top. And why in the world did she wear a black bra with a white tank top, I asked myself silently. I prayed to not burst into uncontollable fits of laughter.

I composed myself and went up to recieve the host then proceed to take the cup of Christ’s blood from her. She was very solemn as she handed it to me. I tried to avoid looking at her large breasts so poorly supported by that black bra!

Egad, what ever happened to little old ladies in hair buns and house dresses? It’s not even hot today. She did look like a nice lady though, I’m sure God loves her.

I’ve posted alot on veil/matilla threads. . . there is one and only one case in which I’d mandate the wearing of a veil – those women that come to daily Mass in rollers:bigyikes:

I guess it’s a good thing we have posted right on the front door what is suitable attire for being in the presence of Our Lord!

God will accept the ignorant, simple and poor but Lord have mercy on those who should know better but are callous enough to believe the Presence of God does not warrant your finest. And if you don’t have fine - you’d better go get it.

I should wonder what all would wear if they were granted an audience with The Queen of England. When everday at Holy Mass you are granted an audience with the King of Kings!

  1. Daily Masses arent that crowded
  2. If the Priest didnt have his usual help, he simply could have avoided serving the Cup and just stuck with the Host, ESPECIALLY since EMs are supposed to be given formal instruction and not just “deputized” from the pew! 😦

The weirdest outfit I ever saw in church looked like something out of Mel Gibson’s Mad Max movies. Let’s see if I can remember it exactly. One thing I recall was the leather vest with spiky fur that surrounded the arm hole. Imagine a ring of fur sticking out straight in all directions. I also recall very long boots and a huge, huge hat, which I think also had a lot of fur. The whole get-up was very weird. In the springtime the female EMHCs in my parish seem to try to out-do each other as to who can wear the most outrageous hat. It’s like some kind of redneck fashion show.

Khoria Anna,

Please tell me you have never seen a woman in curlers! :crying:

More than one – makes you wonder who they’re dressing up for later. At least I’ve only seen one where the rollers were not covered by a kercheif. sigh at least I’ve never seen it (yet) on Sunday morning!!!

Well, I don’t think bad taste is a sin,and one’s taste in dress is very subjective, but as soon as I saw that black bra strap sliding down her shoulder I thought of all my opinionated friends at Catholic Answers Forum!!! 😃

I know this is the ‘left coast’ and all, but people sure do dress casually these days… All you dress police will be happy to hear that I bring a change of clothes to work and change out of my nursing scrubs (Which are also incredibly casual these days) I did bring a nice pair of shorts one day. :o

I agree with “Faithful 2 Rome”. The most disturbing thing about the situation you described was the action of your priest. Perhaps he didn’t phrase his request clearly enough, and he was really asking if there were any Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers present and willing to help. I hope this is what his intentions were.

My husband’s parish has lay people assigned for the readings, the petitions, and the announcements. The petitions and the announcements are read by a “commentator.” Guy showed up one week in sweat pants, a hoodie and tennis shoes, like he just came off the basketball court. As my husband was newly assigned there, he didn’t say anything, figuring there was some reason the guy looked like a slob. Two weeks later he shows up at Mass dressed the same way. My husband very gently asked him if he had something else he could change into. They guy said, “What’s wrong with what I have on? Fr. Joe said we could wear whatever we want!” My DH said, well if you want to sit in the assembly, I guess it’s okay, but not if you will be at the ambo. DH had someone else cover the guy’s day, and two weeks later, the guy came to mass in khakis and a sport shirt.

These situations need to be addressed by the priest/deacon, and it can be done charitably and without hard feelings.

The most ridiculous outfit I’ve seen at Mass has been on my own daughter! I try to impress upon her the importance of dressing appropriately for Mass but of course I get the old “God doesn’t care how I look”. Being that she’s not quite 15 yrs., I guess I’m just glad she goes to Mass at all.(although sometimes I think she just goes for the social hour of Life teen.) All in good time, I keep telling myself.

Did you notice the young woman at Mass seated to your right on Sunday with the color-coordinated veil LOL - but at least she was trying.

Teens are looking to rebel as we all remember - and there comes a time when peers are more those to whom they look for validation than parents. If we could only find peers that would be the ones we would like them to emulate. Pretty hard in this day of sagging pants and Brittany Spears clones.

Too bad you can’t get her to go to a TLM one Sunday in addition to her teen Mass. The peers she might see there might give a different picture - I noticed some rather good looking young men there - 😉

I wasn’t going to reply to this, but I guess I will.

What if that woman reads these forums? How do you think she would feel? Regardless of the fact that she has anonymity, it is still an assault to her dignity.

Obviously, it wasn’t appropriate attire for Mass, and that is a valid point to have a discussion about. But to laugh at her? Essentially ridiculing her?

Sometimes attitudes can be just as ugly as outfits.

God bless that woman for offering and for knowing that God loves her for who she is and not what she wears. God bless you for being at Mass after working the night shift. After working all night it must be hard to focus on why we are there sometimes and not the people aroundus.

I don’t know how old White Dove is but what I found rather offensive was her remarks about the woman’s breasts - that has nothing to do with her dress and probably not her obesity either. It happens to all women if they live long enough - its gravity. As a nurse you must know this and it horrifies me to think what you might say about your patients’ anatomy

I don’t think her dress was appropriate either but since you did say she was elderly, how do we know she did not have Alzheimers or that her income was too limited to buy new clothing.

Shorts, however, at any age I don’t feel are appropriate at Mass but I would find them more offensive on a young girl who would surely be a distraction to the men and could even be an occasion of sin for the thoughts those shorts might stir up.

So I have mixed feelings about this thread - in principal, I feel dress should be appropriate at Church, but I found the post to be without much charity.

Did anyone else volunteer?

I’ve been guilty of ridiculous Mass outfits. 😃

When I was a first-year medical resident, I used to go to daily Mass at the hospital chapel in my surgical scrubs, no less. Sometimes, I wore a paper hair bonnet and booties. Once, I had a rubber glove tying my hair back.

When I’m on weekend call (meaning I don’t have to stay at the hospital for 48 hours, just be nearby), I go to Mass at my normal parish wearing (nice, clean) scrubs in case I get paged.

This week, I attended a weekday Mass at a nearby parish. A woman I know served as altar server, as she often does.

Before Mass, she cheerfully chatted and laughed with another lady in a front pew.

When Mass began, she processed to the altar with the celebrant.

She wore a T-shirt, shorts, and sandals while serving. Honestly, she was all over that altar, back and forth, running to and fro doing everything possible to assist the priest. When there was nothing to do but stand still, she wiggled her toes.

I’m certain that she considers her serving to be a great privilege, but I guess she does not consider her attire while in the sanctuary to be important. This woman must be in her 40’s.

I was terribly saddened.
Saddened by the absence of altar boys, which were once plentiful, but now are rarely seen in this parish.
Saddened by this grown server’s very distracting attire and busy “body language.”
And saddened by my own inability to filter it out and focus on the Sacred!
I wondered, who truly displeases God: this server, or me?

Pax Christi. <><
