The god of Mammon, who is “like a wild animal, trying to clutch me with his talons and enslave me,” and people not open to the Holy Spirit, who “are like swamps that give off foul-smelling gases,” are just a few of the analogies that appear in the latest collection of papal homilies.

Rigid doctors of the law “imagine God as a kind of really strict school teacher who assigned humanity homework that only very few are able to do. For the majority, the notebook of life will be handed back with the grade: ‘Poor!’”

If it sounds like the usual fare from Pope Francis, it is strongly similar, but the author in this case was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the future Pope Benedict XVI.

Pope Benedict XVI was less conservative than people think as Pope Francis is less liberal than people think.

Both were spot on with doctrine.

There differences are merely how they brought the message to the people.

In the Church, the doctors of the law usually refer to canon law. I do not know if this is the case here. The quotes are from ten unpublished sermons available only in Italian in a new book entitled The Homilies of Pentling. I would not put a lot of trust or worry into any of this at this point, as the quote is too remote to be verified.

thats how i see catholicism being presented by a rigid traditionalism. few get to heaven because only a few priests and perpetual virgins were called to sainthood. the rest of us are just poor unworthy sinners.
