Mayor Eduardo Paes of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil stated Aug. 21 that he expects World Youth Day 2013 to “bring together more people than the World Cup,” which will take place in 2014.
Rio de Janeiro will host World Youth Day in 2013. The next year, Brazil will host the World Cup.
Paes attended the 2011 World Youth Day closing Mass at Madrid’s Cuatro Vientos airfield, together with the governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Cabral, reported ReligionenLibertad.com.
At the end of the Mass, Pope Benedict officially announced that the next World Youth Day will take place in Rio.
“I was moved by the crowds I saw today at the Mass and on the streets of Madrid and it makes me think of the size a similar event will have in our city, given the faith of our people,” Paes said.
